Human activities have more than doubled the annual input of reactive nitrogen to the biosphere compared to prehistoric levels, causing escalating emissions of the gas nitrous oxide (N2O), which contributes to global warming and depletion of stratospheric ozone. A major source of these emissions is microbial red/ox-transformations of mineral nitrogen. The overarching scientific goal of NORA is to improve our understanding and predictive ability with regard to the regulatory biology and ecology of microbes involved in these reactions and use these findings to develop new strategies for reducing N2O emissions. This demands interdisciplinary approaches and cutting-edge technologies. NORA will create a pipeline from genomics and systems biology, through biochemistry, physiology, ecology, modeling and microcosm and field studies to industrial applications.
