About the research group
The Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry Research Group has research projects within two main scientific disciplines; bioanalytical chemistry and medicinal chemistry. Research projects in bioanalytical chemistry include proteomics and metabolomics studies, as well as targeted quantification of small molecules from biological samples. Research projects in medicinal chemistry include synthesis and studies of bioactive peptides and peptidomimetics for lead-compound identification, structure activity-relationship studies and mode-of-action studies.
The Natural Product and Medicinal Chemistry Research Group currently consists of one professor, three associate professors, two technicians-, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. The research group teaches courses in analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry and natural products chemistry at master and bachelor level.
About the research project
This project is performed in collaboration with the WADA accredited Doping Control Laboratory at the Seibersdorf Laboratories, Seibersdorf, Austria. A major part of the practical laboratory work will take place at Seibersdorf Laboratories, which requires the PhD student to spend time in Seibersdorf, Austria.
The main objective of the project is to investigate relevant long-term steroid metabolites for doping analysis. Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) are prohibited in sports due to their performance‐enhancing effects. An adequate detection of such steroids in doping analysis requires distinct knowledge of the human metabolism and the urinary excretion profile of steroids and metabolites, as well as state-of-the art methodology based on chromatography as well as multidimensional high resolution mass spectrometry.
