PhD position in structural geology and petrology

UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Science and Technology, has a PhD position vacant for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD).

The position is attached to the Department of Geosciences and is affiliated with the Solid Earth Science Research Group.

The appointment is for a period of four years.

The PhD position is for a fixed term, with the objective of completion of research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD candidate shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment. Information about the application process for admission to the PhD programme, application form and regulations for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) are available at the following address: NT-Faculty.

Further information about the position is available by contacting:

-       Professor Holger Stunitz, holger.stunitz@uit.no, +47 77623117

-       Head of department Matthias Forwick, matthias.forwick@uit.no, +47 77644453

The position’s field of research/research project and other duties

The research project covers the fields of structural geology, metamorphic petrology, geochronology, and tectonics. The goal of the project is the reconstruction of the tectonic history of the Lyngen Nappe Complex and its underlying and overlying contact zones in the North Norwegian Caledonides. The focus of the research will be on the kinematics, crustal position, and the timing of the movements in order to reconstruct the orogenic evolution of the Caledonides in northern Norway. The appointed candidate will work on the structures and on pressure-temperature-deformation-time evolution of the Lyngen nappe contacts and the determination of the timing of thrusting or detachment in order to develop a tectonic model for the Caledonides in the high North. The project includes fieldwork, as well as microstructural laboratory work related to the kinematics of the units, thermodynamic modelling of the pressure-temperature evolution of metamorphic rocks, isotopic dating (U-Pb dating of zircon) and isotopic dating of metamorphic minerals (U-Pb, Lu-Hf and Ar-Ar dating) connected with studies of deformation microstructures.

The successful candidate will dedicate 25% of her/his working time to duty work for the department. This may include teaching (e.g. supervision and evaluation of student exercises) at various levels.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must fulfil the requirements for admission to the faculty’s PhD programme (cf. Regulation for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway). In addition, they must be able to document proficiency in English equivalent to Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification, refer to the website about PhD regulations at UiT. The successful candidate must have a Master degree or equivalent in geology with a component of structural geology/petrology/isotope geochemistry and/or tectonics or microstructural/EBSD analysis, and must have documented fieldwork experience associated with his/her master project. A hands-on experience with one of the above-mentioned laboratory techniques is beneficial.

The research work will be performed in collaboration with national and international partners, and progress and results are expected to be presented at international conferences/workshops, as well as published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Therefore, a good command in English, both written and oral, is required. Applicants not able to communicate in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are required to learn Norwegian within a reasonable amount of time.

Emphasis shall also be attached to personal suitability. We value positive attitude, flexibility, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Working conditions

The normal period of employment is four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year, distributed as 25 % of each year, shall be used for teaching or other duties for the university, cf. Guidelines for the research fellow’s duties.

A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the research fellow has already completed parts of his/her research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position (PhD Candidate, research assistant, or the like) in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.

Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

The application must be submitted electronically via the application form available on www.jobbnorge.no and shall include:

  • Letter of application
  • CV (containing a complete overview of education, supervised professional training and professional work)
  • Names and addresses of three referees
  • Diploma and transcript from your Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Diploma and transcript from your Master’s degree or equivalent
  • Diploma supplement for completed degrees
  • Documentation of English language proficiency
  • List of works and description of these (see below)

The list of works shall contain the following information:

  • author(s), the work’s title
  • for articles: the journal’s name and volume, the first and last page of the article, year of publication
  • for publications: publisher, printer, year of publication, number of pages

An expert committee will assess the applicants. During this assessment process, emphasis will be attached to the applicant’s potential for research as shown by:

  • Master’s thesis or equivalent
  • any other academic works
  • professional references

In addition, the committee will consider work experience or other activities of significance for the implementation of the PhD studies, and to any teaching qualifications. This includes teaching education, teaching experience, experience from popularization and other types of dissemination. Information and material must be submitted by the stipulated deadline to be considered during the assessment.

The applicants who are assessed as the best qualified will be called to an interview that will be via Skype. The interview shall among other things aim to clarify the applicant’s personal suitability for the position.
