NTNU - knowledge for a better world
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) creates knowledge for a better world and solutions that can change everyday life.
Faculty of Engineering
Department of Structural Engineering
PhD Research Scholarships within Timber Structures (IV-237/18)
A PhD scholarship will be available within the Timber Structures research group at NTNU, Department of Structural Engineering. The positions will with reservation of final approval, be financed by European ERA-NET project «Dynamic Response of Tall Timber Buildings under Service Load». The scholarship is awarded for a period of 3 years; but also a 4 years period with 25% of the time allocated to teaching/tutoring may be considered. The project will start as soon as possible after January 1 2019.
The « Dynamic Response of Tall Timber Buildings under Service Load » project consortium consists of 14 partners in 6 European countries. The main goal of the project is to identify experimentally a number of full-scale Tall Timber Building (TTB) structures within Europe and, based on these results, develop representative FE-models for predicting the vibration response of TTBs exposed to wind-induced dynamic loading.
The scientific and technological objectives are to; quantify the structural damping in as-built TTBs, identify and quantify the effects of connections and non-structural elements on the stiffness, damping and wind-induced dynamic response of TTBs, develop a bottom-up numerical FE-model for estimating the dynamic response of multi-storey timber buildings, and validate the predicted response with in-situ measurements on TTBs.
The PhD scholarshipis is allocated to the part of the project working mainly on FEM modelling concepts for energy dissipation in TTBs.timber bridges, as well as on experimental quantification of energy dissipation. The PhD applicant is expected to have good cooperative skills, to carry out experimental research and to develop advanced numerical models within the scope of the project, and to publish scientific work in recognized journals. Knowledge of the European basis of design of buildings and structures and of FEM software packages like Abaqus is considered as an advantage.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, you need to have a relevant Master's degree, or equivalent within structural engineering or mechanics, and you must qualify for admittance as a PhD student at NTNU, See page http://www.ntnu.no/ivt/phd/english. Documentation of English proficiency, if English or a Scandinavian language is not the applicant’s mother tongue,is needed. The PhD scholarship holder will be required to work in Trondheim, together with the rest of the timber research group. A statement on when the applicant can start in the position if selected, should be supplied.
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 449 400 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.
