Postdoctor position within Design and Verification of Large Floating Coastal Structures

Postdoctor position within Design and Verification of Large Floating Coastal Structures (IV-234/18)

Description

A two-year Postdoctoral position is available at Department of Marine Technology, NTNU, within the area of structural response analysis of large coastal structures. This position is a part of the ongoing KPN project "Design and Verification of Large Floating Coastal Structures"; LFCS, funded by NRC (Norwegian Research Council) and partners LMG Marin, Multiconsult, Norsk Hydro, NPRA (Norwegian Public Road Administration) and Sweco. (See https://www.sintef.no/projectweb/lfcs/)

Established design and analysis methods for floating structures are based on wave field models that are uniform over the structure. Considering large floating coastal structures for fjord crossing and near-shore development, such as floating bridges, every component of environmental loading can vary over the structure; waves can be very different at the two sides of a fjord, wind characteristics will be influenced by local topography, and the water current will vary with local bathymetry. This will have important implications for the analysis and design of these bridges.

The large dimensions (typically 2 - 5 km for proposed fjord crossings by floating bridges) will cause the structure to be quite flexible, and the fluid-structure coupling (hydroelasticity and aeroelasticity) will not be negligible as in the case of traditional rigid bodies, and this interaction may become crucial.

The primary objective of the present research project is to provide recommendations for design guidelines for large coastal structures (LFCS), and to establish the corresponding methods/tools for hydroelastic analysis of coastal structures in spatially inhomogeneous environmental conditions and bathymetry.

Secondary objectives are to provide rational models for description and evaluation of inhomogeneous environmental conditions for coastal areas in relation to wave/wind/current loads, to develop improved methods for computation of hydroelastic response of large floating coastal structures under such conditions, and to develop improved methods for mooring and positioning of such structures.  Combined rigid, elastic and/or articulated structures are also to be addressed.

A considerable part of the KPN-project is devoted to model testing in the ocean lab, thus hydroelastic model tests are an important part of this project. The Postdoctor will be involved in the planning and analysis of model test results. An important task in this connection will be to conduct numerical studies to support the selection of model and environmental conditions for the testing.

Qualifications
The applicants must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in marine technology, ocean engineering or a similar relevant area. Disciplines such as structural analysis and hydrodynamics are particularly relevant, as well as background in analysis of fluid-structure interaction. Familiarity with experimental techniques is considered to be an advantage.

Excellent English skills, spoken and written, are required. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

The successful candidate should be enthusiastic and highly motivated and be willing to work both independently and with other researchers. The successful candidate must also fulfill the requirements for admission to a doctoral program.

Conditions
Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 512 200 per annum before tax. There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

The appointment of the Postdoctoral fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.

The Postdoctoral fellowship is awarded for 2 years.
