POST DOCTOR POSITION IN MATERIALS SCIENCE – SIMULATIONS OF 2D LAYERED MATERIALS FOR Mg-ION BATTERIES

A Post Doctor position in the field of density functional theory simulations of 2D layered materials for Mg-ion battery materials is available. The aim is to develop a new family of high capacity cathode materials for Mg-ion batteries. DFT calculations will be performed to determine and understand the charge/discharge and degradation mechanisms as well as the Mg ion transport properties of the cathode materials. Specifically, the thermodynamic and lattice dynamical stability of bulk and slabs will be studied along with the stability of relevant interfaces. Detailed studies of the energetics and mobility of Mg and Mg-complexes will be determined, both in cathode materials and in the electrolyte. The position is funded by the FRINATEK project “High-capacity 2D layered materials for Mg-ion batteries”, which aims for a fundamental breakthrough in Mg-ion battery technology. The FRINATEK funding programme of the Research Council of Norway funds bold, fundamental research of outstanding quality and potential. One PhD student will do experimental work on the same topic, and will collaborate closely with the successful applicant. Additionally, there are two other PhD students funded by other sources, currently working on a similar topic, one experimental and one on modelling.

The battery activity at our department has grown considerably in the past few years and there are currently 10 PhD students, 4 Post Doctors, 1 temporary researcher and 6 master students working on various battery research projects. In addition, we work closely with SINTEF Industry, which has considerable activity on battery research.

The applicant must hold a PhD in materials science, materials chemistry, solid state physics or similar. Candidates with documented expertise in electronic structure calculations on 2D layered materials, ionic conductors or oxide interfaces are preferred. Additional experimental experience or documented collaboration with experimentalists will be considered an advantage. We search for a person that is creative, innovative and can work independently. The person we are searching for has good communication skills and is able to collaborate with other researchers in the project as well as international collaborators. The candidate must document the ability to publish scientific papers.

The appointment of the Post Doctor will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. The position as Post doctor is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 515 200 per year before tax.There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution. The Post Doctor period is 2.5 years.
