Postdoctor in Sea Ice (IV-223/18)
FATICE deals with assessment of fatigue damage on fixed offshore structures exposed to drifting ice. Its overall objective is to contribute to the efficient and cost-saving design of offshore structures in harsh environments that are at the same time safe for mankind and the environment. It has the following Work Packages:
WP1 Full-scale data, WP2 Response curves for Ice-Induced Vibrations (IIV), WP3 Numerical analysis IIV, WP4 Ice model basin testing, WP5 Fatigue under VAL (variable amplitude loading), WP6 Towards guidelines and WP7 Demonstration of design guidelines.
Post-Doc main focus
The Post-Doc will mainly work within WPs 1 and 3, and address the driving forces. Limitations in driving forces are known to significantly limit the severity of ice-structure interaction. The possibility to predict and include these in design is therefore expected to lead to more efficient design and cost-savings. Two essential questions are:
Which ice conditions give relevant ice loads and corresponding structural response?
How can these ice conditions be estimated and predicted by numerical simulations using available remote sensing data and observed and predicted met-ocean conditions?
The Post-Doc is expected to result in a drift model which can be coupled to prediction models for ice loads on structures currently assuming a constant ice drift speed. The drift model is made such that it can easily incorporate available met-ocean data.

PhD within one, or more of the following areas: ice engineering, remote sensing of ice, arctic oceanography and geophysics (drift of sea ice), structural dynamics, control theory and signal processing
Excellent English skills, spoken and written, are required. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 497 000 per annum before tax. There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
The appointment of the Postdoctoral fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.
The Postdoctoral fellowship is awarded for 2 years.
