PhD Position in Onboard DC Power Systems for Electric and Hybrid Ships
At the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), we have an open PhD position related to the following topic:
Optimal Design, Dynamic Modeling and Control of Autonomous DC Distribution Systems for Electric and Hybrid Long-Distance Ferries.
NTNU, as a world leader in maritime research and development, has a national responsibility to provide knowledge and technology to the maritime sector. Green Shipping as a set of solutions for safe, sustainable and energy efficient maritime transportation is a strategic focus for both Norway and NTNU. Within this framework, NTNU with its industry partners has recently established a Maritime Electrification platform for development of low- and zero-emission shipping solutions with multidisciplinary research, including power electronics and DC power systems, battery technology and battery management system, digital science, control and autonomous systems.
The proposed project aims at developing methods and tools required for the electric and hybrid propulsion on long-distance ferries, with a focus on the onboard DC power systems. The main objective of the PhD work is to establish a modeling platform for the control and stability analysis of the ship power and propulsion system based on advanced modeling and simulation techniques.
The PhD work will be carried out in an interdisciplinary research environment and in collaboration with our international academic and industry partners. The supervision team consists of Associate Professor Mehdi Zadeh and Professor Asgeir Sørensen from the Department of Marine Technology and Professor Roy Nilsen from the Department of Electric Power Engineering.
We are seeking an outstanding, highly motivated individual with a Master’s degree in Electrical/Electric Power Engineering, Control Engineering/Cybernetics, Marine Technology, Mathematical Science or a similar relevant area. Preference will be given to applicants with documented knowledge of automatic control, power electronics, dynamical systems modelling, optimization and/or machine learning. The successful candidate should be motivated to fundamental scientific research and be able to work both independently and with other researchers as part of a team.
Academic results, publications, relevant background knowledge, relevant research/work experience, personal qualifications, English language skills (written and oral), and motivation will be considered when evaluating the applicants.

PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 449 400 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.
The appointment is for a term of 4 years including 25 % of teaching duties.
