There is a temporary position available at the Department of Sociology and Political Science as a PhD Candidate in Peace Research. It is a temporary position for a period of three years, but can be prolonged to four years with 25% teaching obligations. The position shall provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD. The position is connected to a PhD programme at the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences.
Information about the Department
The candidate will join the Department of Sociology and Political Science at NTNU, which hosts a wide range of research areas such as sociology, political science, sports science, media, communications and information technology. The department currently has around 80 employees including 27 professors and 12 associate professors in permanent positions. For more information, see https://www.ntnu.edu/iss.
The department offers exciting opportunities for collaboration and research training in the field of peace research. The successful candidate will join the multidisciplinary ‘Violence, Instability and Peace’ research group, which meets fortnightly and brings together members of the department of Economics, Geography, Sociology and Political Science for constructive discussions of ongoing research projects in the field. The department also offers methodological training at the postgraduate level, close links to the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and the Research School on Peace and Conflict. The successful candidate is also free to join other relevant research groups at the Department, such as ‘Elections, Values, and Political Communication’ and others. An annual research allowance will facilitate the successful candidate’s professional development. PhD candidates are encouraged to spend a semester or more abroad. The successful candidate will also join 4 other PhDs working in the field of peace research.
The successful candidate will get access to unique, comparable survey data collected in Guatemala, Nepal, and Northern Ireland in 2016 (N=3,200) through the research project Attitudes for Peace: Post-Conflict Public Opinion (2015-18). More details about the data are available upon request.
The PhD candidate will be expected to conduct research in the field of Peace and Conflict Studies, with a specific focus on the dynamics of intra-state conflict and peace processes. All proposals within this field will be considered, but candidates with proposals that relate to the micro dynamics of peacebuilding and/or conflict recurrence, or that draw on the public opinion tradition, will be looked upon favourably.
The requirement for the position is a completed master’s degree in Political Science, Sociology or a similar field or education to equivalent level. Applicants must have a strong academic record from their previous studies, and must have a weighted average grade for the last two years of their master's or equivalent education (equivalent to 120 credits) of B or higher in terms of NTNU's grading scale.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate confidence in basic regression techniques through a master’s thesis or other relevant publications and/or qualifications. Fluent English skills are required. The application will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Grades from the Master’s degree
- The research proposal (see below)
- Relevant research experience
- Documented skills in quantitative research methods
- Relevant language skills
Payment- and working conditions
The PhD position is paid according to the national salary scheme, gross NOK 449 400 per year, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension Scheme.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The employee is expected to accept possible changes in work tasks. Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite.

The project description should form the foundation for evaluation of admission to PhD – training at the faculty. The project description should be no more than 5 pages and outline the titles, main research question(s), relevant literature and proposed methods including preliminary data sources for 3-4 articles that will constitute a thesis. The description should also include a brief introduction that outlines the project and its contribution to the field. If the proposed thesis is a monograph, then the description should include all of the above information and brief descriptions of the chapter content. The final project description shall be accepted at the latest six months after admission for the admission to be valid.
