Ph.D. Fellowship in Machine Learning Inspired HPC (High Performance Computing) (IE 154-2018)

The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a Ph.D. fellowship at the Department of Computer Science (IDI). The position will contribute and strengthen research at the Department’s HPC-Lab and to the NTNU enabling technologies initiatives NTNU Digital. The appointment is for a term of three years, or four years with teaching duties equivalent to 25%. This is a researcher training position aimed at providing promising researcher recruits the opportunity of academic development in the form of a doctoral degree.

Information about the department

The Department of Computer Science (IDI) is responsible for teaching and research that span the complete width of computer and information science. Currently, IDI employs around 33 professors, 56 associate professors, 19 assistant professors, 35 post-doctoral or pre-doctoral researchers, 21 administrative/technical staff and approximately 100 Ph.D. students. More than 7000 students study one or more courses at the department each year. IDI has offices in both Trondheim and Gjøvik, and the position described in this announcement will be located at IDI’s main office in Trondheim.

Work Description

Large-scale Machine Learning (ML) is now a major application of HPC machines and techniques, as access to huge data sets improves ML performance so long as the data can be processed in a timely manner.  Additionally, improving ML performance has opened the door to its application to a variety of new problems, including to systems-level problems on HPC machines. The combination of these two fields therefore opens up a wide range of research topics.  The candidate we are seeking will be working on cutting edge research related to:

  • How to best apply emerging heterogeneous resource types (e.g. GPUs, MICs, TPUs, etc.) to the computations needed for HPC applications including ML with respect to performance, energy usage, and/or software sustainability. This task may include developing applying ML techniques towards generating auto-tunable applications that can handle a variety of GPUs and other accelerators;
  • How to leverage hardware features designed for ML for other HPC applications;;
  • Analyzing applications from medical visualization, oil & gas, and/or matrix computations and identify and explore the requirements they would pose on a heterogeneous environment, including large-scale HPC systems and/or cloud-based HPC systems.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a research-based master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or computational science and ideally have solid experience with the following:

  • Developing larger parallel applications & system software in CUDA, MPI, and OpenMP;
  • HPC benchmarking, performance modelling, and performance analysis of scientific applications of multicore/many-core and distributed memory systems;
  • Numerical methods, including FFTs, linear algebra, and computational kernels
  • ML techniques and programming environments such as Tensorflow, Torch, and/or Caffe;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly acquire knowledge in new topics.

Work description

We also require excellent written and oral communication skills. Neither for candidates who are native English speakers nor from Scandinavia, can the following tests be used as documentation for English skills: TOEFL, Academic IELTS and Cambridge CAE or CPE.

Minimum scores are:

  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

Appointments are made in accordance with the regulations in force regarding terms of employment for Ph.D. candidates issued by the Ministry of Education and Research, with relevant parts of the additional guidelines for appointment as a Ph.D. candidate at NTNU.

The person who is appointed must comply with the conditions that apply at any time to employees in the public sector. In addition, a contract will be signed regarding the period of employment. Salary conditions

The position is in code 1017 Research fellow, salary grade 51 in the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 443 500 per year, depending on qualifications. A deduction of 2% is made from the salary as a mandatory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
