PhD Research Fellow in Political Science
The University of Agder, Department of Political Science and Management at the Faculty of Social Sciences, invites applications for one full-time PhD Research Fellow in Political Science for a period of three years, alternatively four years with 25% of the time assigned to tasks at the Faculty’s discretion. The ambition of the successful candidate should be to study the politics of digitalisation. Examples of projects include case studies of digital politics and policy, effects of digitalisation of governments and institutions, international and EU governance of digitalisation, etc. The position is located in Kristiansand, Norway.
This position is related to the newly established Research Centre for Digital Transformation (CeDiT). CeDiT conducts advanced social science research on how digitalization transforms societies and institutions. Being an inter-disciplinary research centre, CeDiT aims for research excellence within the field of social science.
The Department of Political Science and Management is an active research environment, with a staff which includes six full Professors, five Associate/Assistant Professors and six PhD Research Fellows. The department conducts research in several areas, reflected in the three research clusters in the department: European integration and transnational governance and governance and leadership in the public sector. The Department is also actively engaged in CeDit, Centre for digital transformation.
Description of the position

Being a global shift, the key research challenge is to understand the public governing of digital transformation. Public governance in this context is ultimately about ‘governance of the digital’ – comprising efforts of transnational regulation of the technology itself. The research ambition is to disclose the degree to which, how, and under what conditions digital transformation is the result of political power structures. Research projects are invited to map and examine the multi-centric institutional terrain that governs digital transformation.
Qualifications and terms

The applicants must qualify for admission to the faculty PhD Programme in the Faculty of Social Sciences, the specialisation in public administration, and must hold a master’s degree or equivalent in political science, public administration, public sector management, governance or equivalent (sub-) disciplines with an average mark of B or better. Applicants must submit a project proposal whose scope lies within the abovementioned areas of priority. The project proposal should comprise a maximum of ten pages in length, including the reference list. The proposal must contain a preliminary presentation of the problematic approach, theoretical foundation, methodological approach and planned progression for the doctoral project. The quality of the project proposal will receive a high level of consideration during the application assessment process.
The appointee must have the ability to work in a goal-oriented, organised, focused and independent manner. During the assessment process, emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s examination results as well as any previous research and development work. Relevant practical experience, personal suitability and good teamwork skills will also be emphasised. Fluency in written and oral English is a prerequisite. The University, on its side, is committed to securing good supervision for the successful applicants. Short-listed applicants will be invited for interviews.

The position is remunerated within the State salary scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017, NOK 449.400 per year. A 2% compulsory pension contribution will be deducted and paid to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund according to current statutory provisions.
