PhD Research Fellow at the Department of Global Development and Planning
The University of Agder, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Global Development and Planning, invites applications for one full-time PhD Research Fellow related to the Research Council of Norway’s project WINDPLAN: challenges and opportunities for public participation in wind power planning - for a period of three years, alternatively four years with 25% of the time assigned to tasks at the Faculty’s discretion. The position is located in Kristiansand, Norway.
The Department of Development and Planning is an active research environment, including five full professors, eight associate/assistant professors, and five PhD research fellows. The department conducts research in several areas, reflected in the three research clusters in the department: Mobility, Culture and Gender, Urban and Regional Development, Future Learning Lab. The Department is also actively engaged in CIEM (Centre for integrated emergency management) and CeDit, Centre for digital transformation.
Description of the position
We welcome applications which meet the following call:
Renewable energy is incorporated in national and international policies as one answer to global climate changes. Wind power development is highly conflictual in Norway as well as the rest of Europe. Issues of legitimacy and social acceptance of wind power is increasingly linked to democratic arenas for public participation in planning, but also to tangible and intangible understandings of place. The research proposal should be related to Norwegian cases and include field work. The purpose of the WINDPLAN project, a three-year project funded by the Research Council of Norway, is to critically explore policy premises, planning rationalities and local community understandings of wind power as well as potentials and limitations for public participation in planning.
Therefore, the Department of Global Development and Planning invites research proposals that focus on the issues indicated above. Applicants are invited to suggest research proposals that explore these topics and beyond.
The PhD project will be attached to the research group: Urban and Regional Planning or at the Department of Global Development and Planning. The project will be directly linked to the Research Council of Norway’s Project WINDPLAN under the program ENERGIX.
Qualifications and terms
Further provisions relating to the positions as PhD Research Fellows can be found in the Regulations Concerning Terms and Conditions of Employment for the post of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Research Fellow, Research Assistant and Resident.
The applicants must qualify for admission to the faculty PhD Program in the faculty of Social Sciences and must hold a master’s degree in social sciences or humanities with an average mark of B or better. Applicants who are in the process of finishing their master’s thesis are also welcome to apply for this position.
Applicants must submit a project proposal with a scope that lies within the abovementioned areas of priority. The project proposal should comprise a maximum of ten pages in length, including the reference list. The proposal must contain a preliminary presentation of the problematic approach, theoretical foundation, methodological approach and planned progression for the doctoral project. The quality of the project proposal will receive a high level of consideration during the application assessment process.
The appointee must have the ability to work in a goal-oriented, organised, focused and independent manner. During the assessment process, emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s examination results as well as any previous research and development work. Relevant practical experience, personal suitability and good teamwork skills will also be emphasised. Fluency in written and oral English is a prerequisite. The position is remunerated within the State salary scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017, NOK 449.400 per year. A 2% compulsory pension contribution will be deducted and paid to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund according to current statutory provisions.
