PhD in Biometric Approach to Behaviour Understanding (IE 147-18)
NTNUs Department of Information Security and Communication Technology (www.ntnu.no/iik) invites applications for a fully funded Ph.D. position in Biometric Approach to Behaviour Understanding with a duration of three years.
About the Department
The Department of Information Security and Communication Technology has 33 permanent scientific staff members, and in total approximately 80 employees. 50 persons work at NTNUs campus in Gjøvik and 30 at NTNUs campus in Trondheim. IIK carries out internationally competitive research organized in seven cross-disciplinary labs covering the academic areas of Internet of Things (IoT), Applied Cryptology, Intelligent Transport Systems, Quantifiable Performance and Dependability of Communication Systems, Biometry, Digital Forensics, and Information Security. The department provides teaching in BSc in IT Operations and Information Security, MSc programmes in Communication technology and Information Security, and PhD programmes in Telematics and Information Security. The department hosts and operates NTNUs Center for Cyber and Information Security, a public-private partnership with 25 members.
The appointment is for a term of three years. This is a researcher training position aimed at providing promising researcher recruits the opportunity of academic development in the form of a doctoral degree.
Human inner states are potentially useful in explaining and predicting human behaviour and decisions in applications. The human factor is in many cases (e.g., cyberattack methods, stress-related disorders, health and medical emergencies, human intervention in automated systems, occupational safety, etc.) considered as an important factor to the outcome of incidents. The main objective of this project is to investigate the feasibility and evaluate the performance of using biometric measurement enabled by contact-based, remote, and social sensors to capture the human inner states for security, safety, and health related applications. The PhD research fellow is expected to design and develop technical solutions to mapping contact-sensed biometric characteristics to remote ones, and to quantitatively model the relationship between the sensed biometric characteristics and the incidents’ outcome to best fit or augment to the existing psychological and cognitive models.
We are looking for a candidate with strong possessing skills related to biometrics, pattern recognition, machine learning, and statistical methods (e.g., cohort, randomised controlled trials), and with interest in applying the knowledge created from data analysis results to cross-sectoral practical applications.
A master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics or education of an equivalent level (commonly consisting of a 180 ECTS credit point bachelor degree followed by a 120 ECTS master degree), where the weighted average grade of the two years of the Master program is of B or higher in accordance with NTNU's grading system.
Knowledge and experience in the following fields can be a plus in the application to the position: (1) psychological and cognitive models for human emotion and behaviour; (2) body sensor system design and development; (3) human behaviour analytics; (4) application development on a mobile platform.

- Good organisation and communication skills with interest in wider context of own research and ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teams.
- Eager to disseminate research results through publications and presentations at international conferences.
- Written and oral fluency in English.
Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
- TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
- IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
- CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

General terms of employment
The appointment of the PhD researcher will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.
