Postdoctor in Combining Integrated Assessment Modelling and Industrial Ecology Methods for meeting the SDGs (IV-205/18)

PostDoc – Combining Integrated Assessment Modelling and Industrial Ecology Methods for meeting the SDGs: Circular economy and climate change mitigation.

The Industrial Ecology Program (IndEcol) at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is seeking a PostDoc to work on the intersection of Integrated Assessment Modelling (IAM) and Industrial Ecology methods, like Lifecycle Assessment (LCA), Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and Input-Output Analysis (IOA). The research will be undertaken in close collaboration with NTNUs Energy Transition Programme and is financed by NTNU Sustainability.

The Industrial Ecology Program (IndEcol) is an interdisciplinary research and teaching program managing its own International MSc program and PhD program. IndEcol has a high reputation within the field as evidenced by a high-profile international evaluation. IndEcol is well recognized for its work in the areas of life-cycle assessment, material flow analysis, and the use of input-output analysis for environmental assessments, as evidenced by numerous publications and international prizes.

NTNU Energy transition is established in order to build a world leading research programme focused on strategies for the transition to a future sustainable energy system. Our research objective is to explore different alternatives for the future energy mix and corresponding transition pathways that may lead us to a low carbon society.

We are specifically asking for a post-doc who has good technical modelling skills, capable of processing large volumes of data and generating complex modelling relationships. The objective of the work is to develop and apply a combined Industrial Ecology and Integrated Assessment Modelling framework that allows for the simultaneous assessment of climate change mitigation and circular economy related aspects, pertaining to the transition of energy and transport sector and its interface with the materials and manufacturing sectors. While also keeping a broader perspective on other environmental indicators across multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

Trondheim is the place of duty. The selected candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team, interact with researchers of different nationalities, and have the opportunity to present scientific papers at conferences and workshops and become part of a global research network.
The candidate should have a PhD degree in integrated assessment/ energy-economic modelling, industrial ecology, economics, engineering, physics, or applied mathematics. Strong analytical capabilities and good written and oral communication skills are essential. Competence in a mathematical modeling/optimization tool (e.g., MatLab, GAMS), data processing tools (e.g., R, MatLab) and data management experience are required. Prior knowledge of life-cycle assessment, material flow analysis and/or input-output modeling is a strong asset. Programming skills in R and/or Python is highly desirable to work with an existing IAM.

The applicant must be fluent in English. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Competence in Norwegian is of advantage as Evidence of high quality scientific publication is mandatory.

Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 485,700 per annum before tax. There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

The appointment of the Postdoctoral fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.
The Postdoctoral fellowship is awarded for 2 years.
