Associate Professor in Human Geography

Associate Professor in Human Geography: Urban and regional research focusing on planning and sustainable resource management

The Department of Geography is advertising a permanent position as Associate Professor in Human Geography affiliated with two of the Department’s strategic areas: Environment, resources, and management and Innovation and regional changes. The thematic focus of the available position reflects NTNU’s vision ‘Knowledge for a Better World’, including NTNU’s ambition to prioritize efforts and resources in accordance with the UN’s sustainability goals.

About the Department
Currently, the Department employs 9 Professors, 10 Associate Professors, 6 researchers, and 12 PhD candidates. The Department has defined four strategic areas: Natural hazards and the effects of climate change; Environment, resources, and management; Mobility, transnationalism and inequality; and Innovation and regional change (https://www.ntnu.edu/geography/strategic-areas). The Department offers a stimulating, vibrant and international work environment. About 400 students are annually enrolled in our study programs.

Qualifications and obligations
The successful applicant must demonstrate a strong research and teaching record as well as documented experience within Human Geography relevant for one or two of the Department’s strategic areas, i.e. Environment, resources, and management and Innovation and regional changes. Central themes within these strategic areas are currently: use, distribution and management of natural resources, urban and rural changes and perspectives on place. With this announcement of a position as Associate Professor, the Department seeks to strengthen and further develop its competences within these fields. Good knowledge about the Norwegian planning and resource management system will be positively evaluated. Finally, skills in Geographic Information Systems will also be positively evaluated.

The person appointed to the advertised position will have specific responsibility for teaching courses at bachelor and master’s levels focusing on urban and regional change, including strategies in planning and management for sustainable development, distribution and use of human and natural resources. The successful candidate will also be required to teach other courses in human geography at bachelor and master’s levels as well as to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and to take part in further developing the teaching programs. The Associate Professor will participate in work connected to student exams without special remuneration.

The Associate Professor will take an active part in developing the Department’s research activities, including actively recruiting PhD candidates. He or she will also have the right and obligation to carry out research within his/her academic field, including to contribute to, and develop the relevant research group(s) and strategic field(s). He or she will be jointly responsible for academic matters together with academic as well as administrative staff in the Department. The Associate Professor will be obliged to follow the regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at NTNU.

The successful applicant must document comprehensive professional qualifications within the relevant field on a level at a minimum equal to a Norwegian PhD degree in human geography. Applicants with documented ability to publish in recognized international scientific journals are preferred. In the evaluation process, scientific work from the past five years will be given particular weight, as will be the ability to obtain external research funding.

Pedagogical qualifications will also be evaluated. This evaluation will be based on documented pedagogical material, pedagogical education, presentational skills in the applicant’s scientific work, experience in supervising PhD or master candidates, and other teaching and pedagogical experience.

Any person employed without university pedagogical qualifications or other documented equivalent qualifications will be required to attend and complete a course in university pedagogics within two years. Personal skills will be ascribed high importance, i.e. motivation and ability to contribute constructively to a team, collegiality, and good communication skills.

The best qualified candidates will be invited to deliver a trial lecture and attend an interview at the Department.

Payment and working conditions
Salary for Associate Professor: Salary Code 1011, starting salary NOK 490 900,- minimum. The successful candidate will normally be paid between NOK 499,600 and NOK 650 200 per year. By law, 2% of the gross salary will be paid to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from salary deductions.
 
The appointment will be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The employee is expected to accept possible changes in work tasks. Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite.

The total work obligation is divided into research, teaching and administration. The division between these fields of work obligation will vary, but approximately equal time should be devoted to research and teaching.
 
Employees in academic positions who are not already fluent in a Scandinavian language must within three years obtain knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to Level 3 in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Language and Literature, NTNU. The University provides such courses.
