Postdoc in European Studies

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU, Trondheim), Department of Historical Studies, offers a full-time 3-year postdoc position in European Studies within the project "Reconciling Europe with its Citizens through Democracy and Rule of Law (RECONNECT)". This is a Horizon2020 project funded by the European Commission. RECONNECT is run by an interdisciplinary consortium involving legal scholars, political scientists, historians and others at 18 institutions throughout Europe. Leadership is based at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. As consortium partner, NTNU is responsible for the project’s methodology. The postdoc researcher will work within NTNU’s European Studies group, particularly with Professor Lise Rye and Dr. Pieter de Wilde.

Project description
The position provides the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research on one of Europe’s current most pressing challenges. The successful applicant gains the chance to advance the frontier of mixed quantitative and qualitative content analysis, to build experience in coordinating large scale international empirical research, to publish independently and with established colleagues, and to expand his/her network through the RECONNECT consortium.

The postdoc focuses specifically on developing and coordinating a large scale representative claims analysis of media debates on major European policy issues. This involves active collaboration with researchers in various European countries. General contributions to the RECONNECT project, including on research design, data management and methodology, can also be expected.

Applicants should hold a PhD in European Studies, Political Science, Communication Science, Sociology or related field by the time the position is taken up. They should document interest in European integration and social science methodology, and have strong language proficiency in English.

The following will count as additional advantages: experience in content analysis; proficiency in Norwegian and additional European languages beyond English; experience in international and/or interdisciplinary collaboration; and expertise on democracy and rule of law.

Terms and benefits
The position is remunerated according to salary level 57 in the national salary scheme, gross NOK 490.900 - annually, of which 2 per cent is deducted for the State Pension scheme.

The appointment will be made in accordance with regulations for fellowship appointments at universities, and with regulations concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. A contract will be drawn up detailing the period of appointment and required duties.

We seek to fill the position as soon as possible, preferably not later than September 1, 2018.

Work place will be Department of Historical Studies, NTNU. Primary residency in Trondheim is required during the duration of the project.
