Researcher (molecular biology / bioinformatics)

At the Faculty of Medicine, Section of Oncology within the Department of Clinical Science, a permanent full-time position as Researcher is available. The position is temporary funded through a four (4) year grant from the Norwegian Research Council, and is part of the project “Genome-directed breast cancer therapy”.

 

About the project/work tasks

  • The candidate will be employed at the Breast Cancer group, headed by professor Per E Lønning, MD, PhD. The group is closely affiliated with the Department of Clinical Oncology, Haukeland University Hospital. While the group’s main force is on translational research on breast cancer, they also perform work in respect to other tumor forms, including melanomas and colorectal cancer. The program centers on genomic (next generation sequencing) identification of predictive markers toward therapy resistance. The work place will within the Mohn Cancer Research Laboratory. The laboratory is equipped with state of the art infrastructure, including sequencing platforms. In addition, we have an extensive program on experimental research in relation to translational findings. The applicant may be working on laboratory genomics / experimental work or be located to the bioinformatics subteam pending on qualifications / interest. As a team, we try to perform science at a high quality level, with publications in high-impact journals. Thus, the position suits a candidate with personal ambitions.

     

    Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The candidate must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within bioinformatics or molecular biology or a closely related area.
  • The candidate must have completed (at least) one period (minimum 3 years) of work at a postdoctoral level within a related area and document skilled experience with methods of relevance.
  • The candidate should document experience in applied statistics (statistical methods within translational cancer research) and experience in analyzing data sets from cancer patients.
  • The candidate must have a substantial publication track record relative to the stage of his / her career.
  • As for a bioinformatician, familiarity with commonly applied algorithms of relevance analysing cancer data sets, with particular emphasis on data generated by NGS, will be considered an advantage (hereunder, algorithms for variant calling, copy number calling, identification of subclones etc.) For a candidate to be appointed in molecular biology, broad knowledge and personal experience with use of next generation sequencing is required.

  • The candidate should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.

  • The candidate should be proficient in both written and oral English and / or the Norwegian language.

The following premises are valid for this Researcher position

  • The Researcher will be a member of the research group of which the topic/project belongs to

  • The salary shall if possible be 100% covered by external financing

  • The Researcher shall actively contribute to attract external funding to the research project, both for her/his own position and other positions, from the Research Council of Norway, EU and other sources

  • The Researcher is expected to have her/his research activity financed by the project of the researcher and the projects of the associated research group

  • The Head of Department may allocate work for the Researcher related to specific research projects

  • The Researcher may participate in committee work and other administrative tasks within UiB

  • The Researcher has no teaching duties, but is expected to supervise master and PhD students when this is a natural part of the research activity of the research group.

  • The Researcher may apply for competence promotion according to the regulations for promotions
