PhD position in Blockchain Technology in Distributed Value Chains (SO IV-144/18)

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a 100% position as a PhD research fellowship position affiliated with the Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering (IVB) at Faculty of  Engineering (IV)

This position is one of 6 positions within the project Trust and Transparecy in Digital Society Through Blockchain Technology, see https: www.jobbnorge.no/ledige-stillinger/stilling/151103, and https://www.ntnu.edu/digital-transformation.

The project is in NTNU’s strategic portfolio of projects to pursue transformative research on the development and application of digital transformation technology. Multi-disciplinarity is a key objective in all the projects, and close cooperation between the PhD research fellows and the disciplines is essential for Trust and Transparecy in Digital Society Through Blockchain Technology.

Information about the department
The Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering is located at NTNU Campus Gjovik and has an educational and research profile, which will contribute to solutions for the central global challenges within the area of sustainable solutions in industry and society. One of these challenges is sustainable manufacturing.

Description
Blockchains can revolutionise the way we understand value chains in the traditional manufacturing industry. ManuFuture has put out three scenarios for future value chains: ad-hoc where tasks are set out in an open market auction; closed where secret data, e.g. process data, is shared internally to a closed number of participants; and distributed/network-based where small production sites near the local market pay to access drawings of a product the customer wants. In order to fully understand these emerging value chains, we need to understand how to transform traditional business models into a more distributed model of sharing information, and intellectual property rights. How, using modern technologies, to share information that is regarded as sensitive, to the mutual benefit of all stakeholders.

This project will explore the challenges connected to such a radical change in value chains and business models. The project will make use of the Learning Factory lab (part for the ManuLab project) at Gjovik. This lab offers a full Industry 4.0 production facility where advanced features can be tested in laboratory conditions. Collaboration of technology management and blockchain researchers will providing the main advisory team. The research will build on the findings of finished research projects at
the Raufoss Industry Cluster, like Lean Operations, AluPart, SFI Normann, and others.

The research will be carried out within a program of 6 PhD projects under the heading of Trust and Transparency in Digital Society Through Blockchain Technology. This multi-disciplinary program includes technological aspects (cryptographic mechanisms, networking requirements, identity management), societal aspects and application areas. The program team involves 12 professors across several different departments and faculties. It is expected that the PhD fellow for this project will collaborate actively with other PhD fellows involved in the overall program and contribute to plenary meetings of the program. This program forms part of NTNU's Digital Transformation initiative.

The appointment is for a term of 3 years without teaching assistance, or up to 4 years including 25% of teaching assistance.
