PhD position within Energy (IE-091-2018)

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a 100% position as a PhD research fellowship affiliated with the Department of Electric Power Engineering (IEL) at Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (IE)

The project is in NTNU’s strategic portfolio of projects to pursue transformative research on the development and application of digital transformation technology. Multi-disciplinarity is a key objective in all the projects, and close cooperation between the PhD research fellows and the disciplines is essential for Digital Economy (DigEco) to succeed.

 

Information about the Department

Currently there are 12 Professors, 7 Associate Professors and 4 Lecturers at the Department of Electric Power Engineering. In addition, there are 4 Adjunct Professors, 2 Adjunct Associate Professors, 10 Postdoctoral researchers, 2 Researchers, about 35 PhD students, and 15 technical/administrative staff. The Department is presently in a growth-phase. Research activities are organized under two Research Groups: Power Systems Group and Power Technology Group. The Department has a good laboratory infrastructure for research and education, as well as a mechanical workshop, supported by a technical staff of about 10 persons. The Department is also in charge of The National Smart Grid Laboratory (https://www.ntnu.edu/smartgrid).

 

Work description

The variability and uncertainty of power generation through RES, along with the consumers´ increasingly proactive role in the power system operation and their expanding technology options (e.g., solar PV, plug-in electric vehicles etc.), drive the need for higher power system flexibility. Dynamic metering, advanced control systems, communication and decentralized ledger technologies enables consumers/prosumers to access markets. Lags between use and pricing may be reduced from days to seconds to make immediate response possible. This challenges current busines models and market designs. The local flexibility markets are in this respect proposed as a viable solution. Consequently, the development of methodologies and procedures for measuring economic and technical flexibility benefits to adequately host uncertain RES, is at the research frontier of flexibility value assessment. However, an efficient market design requires a comprehensive trading mechanism and communication platform.

 

The primary topic of this PhD will be within design and operation of future flexibility markets. The work encompasses the analysis of decentralised electricity trading, such as peer-to-peer trading in a local energy market perspective. This study entails the analysis of the technical performance of operating the local market, in addition to the identification of economic and regulatory aspects.

 

 

 

Qualifications

 

Applicants must hold a M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) within Electrical Power Engineering, managerial economics with focus on energy or computer science, physics or mathematics with specialization in operations research.

Cooperation skills and communication skills are important for the position and will be highly weighted in the selection process.


Candidates completing their MSc-degree in the Spring 2018 are encouraged to apply. In particular, admission to PhD education at NTNU requires an average grade of at least B, within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best), for the last two years of the master’s degree.

The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.

Language requirements

The main working languages are Norwegian and English. As the informants are mostly Norwegian, skills in a Scandinavian Language is desired, but not required. Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:

  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)

  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)

  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A. 

Formal regulations

Appointments are made in accordance with the regulations in force regarding terms of employment for PhD candidates issued by the Ministry of Education and Research, with relevant parts of the additional guidelines for appointment as a PhD candidate at NTNU. Salary conditions
The position is in code 1017 Research fellow, and is remunerated at a gross NOK 436.900 – 537.700 per year, depending on qualifications. A deduction of 2% is made as a statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
