The Smart Wireless Systems (SWS) Research Group

Smart Wireless Systems is an established research field for the group at NTNU in Gjøvik. This is also a field of great relevance for a more efficient organization and management of modern industrial processes. The group has research areas within wireless communication, smart electronics design, industrial process automation, systems engineering and security.

Job description

All places around the world are currently under quick changeover towards a high quality of living, low carbon environment and resource efficient economy. Smart systems are central components for building sustainable cities and combining complete urban informatics. Internet-of-Things (IoT) is an emerging technology evolved from the convergence of wireless technologies, sensing systems, and the Internet. The technology increases the development of new applications such as smart buildings, personalized healthcare, and transportation systems.

The goal of this thesis is to investigate one of the most recent IoT-systems, IQRF®, to provide energy-efficient, reliable and secure communication. IQRF is a technology for wireless packet-oriented communication via radio frequency (RF) in sub-GHz ISM bands. One major research challenge in the IoT lies in streaming and processing large amount of sensor data to provide timely and accurate information. The combination of cloud computing and IoT enables ubiquitous sensing and powerful processing of sensor data streams. In the project, the student will work and investigate one or more of the following directions:

  • Real-time Performance Analysis of IQRF®

  • Similarity Analysis of different IoT Systems

  • Use-case Applications

  • Simulation of IQRF® in MATLAB

  • Comparison of Simulation with Real-Lab experiments.

  • IoT in the Industrial Domain - Electric Power Engineering or Civil Engineering

The project will also involve close collaboration with industry in a strong consortium on IoT for smart cities. Further specification of the topic and project plan will be done in collaboration with the selected candidate.

    Requirements and Qualifications

We seek a highly-motivated individual who

  • Hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, or other relevant disciplines, with an average of B or better.

  • Has a strong applied electrical background and a research-oriented master thesis in a related field, e.g., wireless systems, signal processing or radios.

  • Has a strong experience with programming (matlab, c++, java, c#, etc)

The successful candidate should be creative, independent, self-motivated, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Publication activities in the aforementioned disciplines will be considered an advantage but is not a requirement.

Applicants must be qualified for admission to a PhD study program at NTNU. See http://www.ntnu.edu/ie/research/phd for information about PhD studies at NTNU.

Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language should provide evidence of good written and spoken English language skills. The following tests can be used as documentation: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:

  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)

  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)

  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

All candidates must be able to secure a residency and work permit in Norway. The university is committed to a policy of equal opportunity in employment practices.

Formalities

The appointment is made in accordance with the regulations of employment for PhD candidates issued by the Ministry of Education and Research, with relevant parts of the additional guidelines for appointment as a PhD candidate at NTNU. Applicants must participate in an organized PhD programme of study during their period of employment. The candidate appointed must comply with the regulations for employees in the public sector. In addition, a contract will be signed regarding the period of employment.

Applicants must be qualified for admission to a PhD study program at NTNU. See http://www.ntnu.no/ie/forskning/phd for information about PhD studies at NTNU.
