PhD positions Flash floods hydrology within World of Wild Waters - IV-155/18
World of Wild Waters focus on gamification of Natural Hazards and aim at bringing together knowledge on physical and statistical behavior of Natural Hazards with knowledge on digital storytelling and human behavior to create immersive user experiences based on real data, realistic scenarios and simulations. Experiences to be used as basis for preventive and emergency measures to safe live and cost. World of Wild Waters aim at being the future tool for analyzing and communicating cause and effect of potential Natural Hazards as floods and landslides.
Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for 7 positions as PhD Research Fellows related to the project World of Wild Waters (WoWW). The project is in NTNU’s strategic portfolio of projects to pursue transformative research on the development and application of digital transformation technology. Multidisciplinary is a key objective in all the projects and the positions in World of Wild Waters are at four departments at three faculties. About World of Wild Waters – WoWW:
World of Wild Waters is focused on gamification of Natural Hazards and aim at bringing together knowledge on the physical and statistical behavior of Natural Hazards with knowledge on digital storytelling and human behavior to create an immersive user experience based on real data, realistic scenarios and simulations. Experiences stakeholders, planners, decision makers and emergency agencies can base their preventive and emergency measures at to safe live and cost. World of Wild Waters aim at being the future tool for analyzing and communicating the potential causes and effects of Natural Hazards as floods and landslides. This is a possibility to shaping the future way of working at a field of high societal importance.
The main aim is to develop methodologies for modelling and implementing hydrology in a virtual setting to estimate and predict and update extreme flood hydrographs in an arbitrary water course given available information at Internet based sources. Testing and implementing sensor information for updating purposes will be a part of the work. This implies combining available information from Internet sources (IOT) and meteorological conditions to create a realistic and dynamic evolving flood event. The work will consist of development of and experimental modelling with different hydrologic models. Development of systems to combine relevant information available from different sources as a basis for scenarios and model updating. Testing and validation with field observations. The work will apply statistical methods developed in the World of Wild Waters project to realistically combine events creating the floods and hazards. The user experience and understanding of the processes and consequences are essential and thus a close cooperation with the work packages focused on immersive experience and human behavior is important.
We will prioritize candidates based on the following criteria:
• Competency in Hydrology and hydrological modelling
• Programming skills in relevant languages will be an advantage
• Competencies on IOT, AI, Sensor technologies and internet communication will be an
* Excellent communication skills - written and oral.
• High cooperative skills and ability to work in a team, as well as independently.
In the application the candidate is encouraged to present his or hers motivation for this particular PhD study and briefly sketch how he or she expect, intend or hope to contribute to World of Wild Waters project.
The successful candidate must fulfil the requirement for admission to the doctoral program at the Faculty of Engineering, NTNU. The working languages will be Norwegian and/or English. All applicants must be able to communicate fluently in English (spoken and written). Candidates from universities outside Scandinavia and English speaking countries are kindly requested to document English language proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)).
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 436 900 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.
The position is of 4 years duration,of which 25% teaching duties.
