Associate professor in Digital Culture at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies
The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Bergen invites applications for a permanent position as Associate Professor of Digital Culture at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies (LLE).
The Digital Culture program within LLE currently has five tenured scholars, two PhD candidates and two postdocs, and offers Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Digital Culture. It has two research groups, Bergen Electronic Literature Research Group, and the Digital Culture Research Group. Digital Culture currently hosts EU-financed research projects exploring aesthetic and cultural aspects of machine vision, the relationship between poetry and censorship in a digital world, and the aesthetics of VR narratives and digital video art. The group developed and hosts the ELMCIP Electronic Literature Knowledge Base, which is internationally leading in its field. Digital Culture also participates in international PhD training programs and ERASMUS+ collaborations. The Bachelor and Master’s programmes emphasise a combination of cultural, critical, historical and aesthetic analyses of the digital with practice-based learning. When learning about the history of technology, students also learn simple programming. They learn web design and digital humanities methodologies, they analyse aesthetic genres such as digital art, computer games and electronic literature, and they learn to apply critical theory to ethical and socio-cultural aspects of technology.
The holder of the position is expected to establish residence in the Bergen region and to be able to participate in the work of the department on a daily basis.
Work tasks/research field:
The position comprises both a research and teaching component. The successful candidate will teach and supervise students in the field of Digital Culture and take part in the development of curricula in Digital Culture. They should be able to teach any Digital Culture undergraduate course.
The holder of the position will have the right and the duty to research within their speciality. They will be expected to participate in and lead applications for external research funding, and to work to communicate their research to the general public. There will also be some administrative work and committee work.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
To be qualified for the position, the applicant must have a doctoral degree in Digital Culture or a relevant field, preferably with a specialisation in aesthetic aspects of digital culture, for instance in digital art, computer games, or electronic literature.
Applicants must have published research beyond their doctoral dissertation at a high international level within this area. Experience with practice-based work in digital humanities, creative practice or other digital method-based research may also be considered in the evaluation.
In assessing the applicants, special weight will be given to academic research published during the last five years.
The successful applicant must have good collaboration skills. Evidence of ongoing research activity and potential to strengthen the department's research environment are essential.
A successful record of attracting external research funding will be given weight.
The holder of the position will be expected to teach at both graduate and undergraduate levels, and to supervise master as well as doctoral students.
The selection process will include an assessment of the candidate’s personal suitability for the position.
Basic pedagogical training is a requirement for the position. If this requirement is not met prior to employment, the successful applicant will be offered a course to acquire the necessary teaching skills.
The teaching languages are English and Norwegian. The successful applicant is expected to master Norwegian or another Scandinavian language sufficiently for the purposes of teaching and administration within two years of being appointed. Norwegian courses for international employees are available.
We can offer:
- Salary at pay grade 60-65 (code 1011/ Pay range 24, alternative 4) on the state salary scale. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 517 300–568 600 before taxes. Further salary advancement will depend on seniority. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well qualified applicants.
