On January 1st, 2017, Bergen University College, Sogn og Fjordane University College and Stord/Haugesund University College merged to form Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

With about 16,000 students, is one of the largest higher education institutions in Norway. A broad range of academic programmes are offered at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.

3 PhD research fellow positions in kindergarten knowledge

3 PhD research fellow positions are available in kindergarten knowledge at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports, Campus Bergen.

The Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports has four institutes with offices in Bergen, Sogndal and Stord. The faculty is one of the largest teacher education institutions in the country with around 6200 students and 500 employees, offering kindergarten teacher education, primary school teacher education for Grades 1-7 and 5-10, practical pedagogical education, bachelor programs, master's programs and PhD program. The faculty has an extensive continuing education and training program. The research activity at the faculty is organized in research programs and research groups.

Kindergarten Knowledge Centre for Systemic Research on Diversity and Sustainable Futures (KINDKNOW) at Western Norway University of Applied Science (HVL) is engaged in local, regional, national and international Early Childhood Educational Research (ECER). The centre aligns itself with ideas such as participatory research, pedagogical innovations, education for sustainable futures and leadership for social justice and diversity. This includes themes likes eco-citizenship, children’s exploration, sustainable language and Bildung (formative processes and pedagogy). The centre works closely with kindergarten teacher education (KTE) and the Master in Kindergarten Knowledge and the PhD program Bildung and Pedagogical Practices.

The KINDKNOW centre is based at HVL, connected to the Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports, Campus Bergen. The Faculty offers a range of educational programs at bachelor, master and PhD level and hosts research centres. The centre also includes researchers from UiT –The Arctic University of Norway and University of Stavanger, along with local and international partners.

Working within the KINDKNOW centre you will join a team of highly qualified academics with a passion for developing new knowledge of relevance for children, families, staff and leaders in the early year’s field. As a PhD student in the centre you will be required to undertake high quality research and make a significant contribution to the development of research at the centre. You will join established research groups and a dynamic milieu of PhD students and academics working with professionals in early years institutions in Norway and internationally.

1. PhD position in Food and Meals
It is anticipated that this PhD project should be directed toward research on food and meals practices in kindergarten. The project may explore the nutritional, cultural, pedagogical and/or sustainable understandings of food and meals in the kindergarten from the perspective of children, staff, parents and/or the kindergarten as an institution. Relevant topics may be aspects of food and meal organisation, food preferences, choices and experiences, food and meals as pedagogical arenas including e.g. taste and liking/disliking of food, food and meals as contributors to a sustainable development, food and meals in multicultural kindergarten aspects or concerning social inequality in health. The candidate could be involved in both explorative and intervention studies in connection to the PhD project, and in studies in China. The impact of the PhD project from a short- and long-term perspective should be elaborated on in the project description.

This PhD position will suit an applicant with a master’s degree (120 ECTS) in Early Childhood Education or relevant master´s degrees connected to Food and Meals. Whatever the master`s degree, the application should demonstrate solid knowledge and skill in a) the selected cross sectional area in the project description, b) methodological design and c) relationship to the concept of ‘Bildung’ or cultural formation.

2. PhD position in Multilingual mathematics and digital tools
It is anticipated that this PhD project will look at one aspect connected to the development or use of playful, mathematical, digital games by multilingual kindergarten children. These aspects could include focussing on how parents and teachers of kindergarten children could collaborate in the design of the digital games or on how the digital games could be improved after trialling. There would also be possibilities for investigating teacher education students learning about using digital games with multilingual children or investigating how the children themselves use the digital games. The project description should clearly set out which aspect will be the focus of the project.

This PhD position will suit an applicant with a master’s degree (120 ECTS) in Early Childhood Education or relevant subjects connected to multilingualism, digital tools or mathematics. Whatever the master`s degree, the application should demonstrate solid knowledge and skill in a) the selected cross sectional area in the project description, b) methodological design and c) relationship to the concept of ‘Bildung’ or cultural formation.

3. PhD position in Kindergarten Knowledge into sustainable futures
It is anticipated that this PhD project will look at kindergarten as a field of knowledge with a history, a current position and with a future. This PhD position should be built upon:

  1. Historical description of kindergarten as a field of knowledge.
  2. An overview of the present situation of kindergarten as a field of knowledge with a focus on how concepts such as ‘danning’/cultural formation/formative development/becoming/Bildung are operating in the field.
  3. An intervention study in cooperation with one or more stakeholders in the kindergarten field and with researchers connected to the Centre. This intervention study should have one specific topic chosen from this list of interests:
  • Sustainable leadership and/or organisational practices
  • Sustainable language practices
  • Eco-citizenship
  • Sustainable cooperation with migrant children and their families
  • Evaluation in kindergartens from the perspectives of stakeholders, such as children and families, staff and leaders
  • Children as explorers within arts (music, visual, bodily, material)/science/social relations/places
  • Institutional conditions for play/learning/identity/activity/formative development
  • Diverse children as meaning-makers and transformative agents across milieus and life conditions.

The master`s degree must reflect the chosen arena of research and the application should demonstrate solid knowledge and skill in a) the selected cross sectional area in the project description, b) methodological design and c) relationship to the concept of ‘Bildung’ or cultural formation.

Irrespective of the thematic sub-project chosen, it is expected that education for sustainability and/or education for diversity will be an important context of the PhD project. Candidates are urged to make themselves aware of the aims of the centre to ensure that they make the links between their own ideas and those of the centre as clear as possible.

Applicants must have a master’s degree (120 ECTS) in early childhood educational science or other subjects relevant for the positions. Irrespective of master`s degree, the application must demonstrate solid knowledge and skills in the selected cross sectional area in the project description.

Master’s degree of good quality (normally A or B) or equivalent qualifications must be obtained prior to the application deadline. Applicants must submit a preliminary project description of up to five pages that presents the topic, problem and choice of theory/methodology for a potential project. The contact persons will, upon request, hold a webinar for supporting the process of writing the project description. Interested applicant must take contact early in the process. This preliminary project description will be used for evaluating the candidate’s potential for completing a PhD, but will not be considered the final project description. The final fellowship project will be developed in consultation with supervisors and research team.

The successful candidate must apply to the doctoral program Bildung and pedagogical practices at the Faculty of Teacher Education, Arts and Sport. An application for admission to the doctoral program must be submitted after appointment. The final plan for the completion of the program must be approved by the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences within 3 months of beginning the position.

It is a requirement that the successful candidates have their workplace at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Campus Bergen. The PhD thesis should be completed within 3 years.

The following qualifications will be emphasized: The most important will be professional qualifications in the designated area that is the quality of the master's thesis or equivalent qualifications and on methodological qualifications. As well, the candidate’s project description will be important in determining the quality of the application and how closely it fits with the aims of the centre. Scientific publications and experiences connected to the aims of the centre will also be viewed favourably.

PhD stipends are recruitment positions that will contribute to an active research environment at HVL. There is a wish for relatively newly qualified applicants who have recently gained their Master`s degree.

Good oral and written language in English and/or Scandinavian languages and relevant experience from education and research.

The positions have a position code 1017 Fellowship, which ensures a wage level 50 in the Norwegian salary levels. Further promotion occurs after time in the position.
