Researcher - temporary position

There is a vacancy for a Researcher (code 1108) at the Department of Comparative Politics, University of Bergen. The position is for a fixed-term period of 5 months, starting 1st of May 2018, and is related to a project on legal authority on climate issues.


Description of the project

The project seeks to codify legal authority on climate issues. To do that, it develops a coding scheme to measure variation in legal authority at multiple levels (from the local to the international level), across policy areas (five most relevant policy areas for climate), across the different phases of the policy cycle (from initiation to implementation), across countries (advanced democracies), and over time (1950-2017). The project generates distinct measures of formal authority for each of the levels, over time, across countries, across policy areas, and across policy cycle phases.


The tasks:

The researcher will be applying an existing coding scheme, complement previous pilots, complete new pilots, starting with German-speaking countries. Further, the tasks include

mapping all relevant institutional and legal changes over time, to identify and collect the relevant  literature, and apply the coding scheme and to produce raw-data tables. The researcher will also produce the accompanying country reports, classify the relevant resources in a digital archive, and critically engage with the coding scheme in view of its refinement and engage substantively with the project.  The project’s working language is in English. Qualifications and personal qualities

The successful applicant must have:

  • MA degree in Comparative Politics, Public Administration, or Political Science, with a high grade (grade A for the MA thesis)
  • Experience of working on climate issues
  • Knowledge of the political system of German-speaking countries, European/OECD democracies, and the international political system (EU, UN, WTO)
  • Candidates must have experience in coding, data management, and data entry, as well as experience in statistics/quantitative analysis, and with statistical software (STATA, R).
  • Candidates with experience of working in large collaborative projects on climate issues using quantitative/statistical data will be preferred
  • Knowledge of qualitative work is  also necessary.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English, German, and one of the Scandinavian languages is a requirement.
