Postdoctoral research fellowship positions in Electrically Actuated Safety Valves

The position’s field of research/research project

The Postdoctoral positions are in the field of electrically actuated valves used in safety functions. The final solution should be designed in compliance with IEC 61508 and one position will have focus on motor control and the other on safety. Successful candidates will be appointed for a period of 2 years.


About the department

The Department of Engineering Cybernetics (Institutt for teknisk kybernetikk, ITK) has 24 professors, 17 adjunct professors, about 15 postdocs and researchers as well as 70 PhD candidates. We have 17 employees in our technical and administrative staff. Approximately 160 candidates graduate annually from the three MSc programs in cybernetics, which comprise over 700 students in total. Also, about 35 candidates graduate annually from the BSc study in electrical engineering with specialization in automation. The research and educational activities at ITK include both fundamental and applied activities in areas such as automatic control and systems theory; estimation and optimization; cyber-physical systems; autonomous unmanned vehicles; robotics; ships and marine systems; process control; smart grids; offshore renewable energy; automated drilling; biomedical technology; safety-critical systems; embedded and real-time systems; systems engineering; and fisheries and aquaculture cybernetics.


Qualification requirements

The first position should have significant knowledge in control of BLDC motors and have a PhD in that or a closely connected field.


The second position should have significant knowledge in safety analysis and be familiar with requirements and design according to IEC 61508. A PhD in safety or a closely connected field is required.


Applicants will be required to justify their candidacy by explicitly explaining their personal motivation and academic aptitude for this position and its inter-disciplinary nature.

The successful candidates have to cooperate and work closely with our industrial partner AkerSolutions that is developing an all-electric solution for subsea production supported by clients.


Applicants must document experience implementing control in programmable devices. Academic results, publications, relevant specialization, work or research experience, personal qualifications, and a desire to make an impact on critical problems will be considered when evaluating the applicants.

Formal regulations

Appointments will be made in accordance with current university regulations. The successful applicant must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees and must sign a contract regulating the starting date and the duration of the employment.


Salary conditions

The position follows code 1352, salary grade range from 57 in the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 490 900 per year, depending on qualifications. A deduction of 2% is made as a statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.



The main supervisors will be Professor Tor Onshus (tor.onshus@ntnu.no ) and Professor Marta Molinas (marta.molinas@ntnu.no ) at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics.



Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:

  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)

  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A.
