NTNU - knowledge for a better world
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) creates knowledge for a better world and solutions that can change everyday life.
POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN UNCONVENTIONAL COMPUTATION (IE 038-2018)
The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a 100 % position as a post-doctoral fellow at the Department of Computer Science (IDI). The position will contribute to the SOCRATES(Self-Organizing Computational substRATES) research project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council (NFR), and to NTNU project initiatives including research on unconventional computation. The appointment is for a term of four years. The position of post-doctoral fellow is a fixed-term position with the primary objective of qualifying for work in top academic posts. The position represents an excellent opportunity for an individual to develop his/her career and contribute to the further development of the field.
Information about the department
The Department of Computer Science (IDI) is responsible for teaching and research that span the complete width of computer and information science. Currently, IDI employs around 30 professors, 60 associate/assistant professors, 19 adjunct professors, and approximately 140 PhD students and post-doctoral researchers and 24 technical/administrative staff. More than 7,000 students study one or more courses at the department each year. IDI has offices in both Trondheim and Gjøvik, and the position described in this announcement will be located in IDI’s main office in Trondheim.
The position is partly founded by NFR (two years) and partly by NTNU (two years). 24 months within the 48 months of the position will be allocated to work on the SOCRATES project funded by NFR and 24 months within the 48 months of the position will be allocated to unconventional computation projects at IDI.
The position is connected to the SOCRATES project, a multidisciplinary project including computer science, neuroscience and nanotechnology, seeking a radical breakthrough toward efficient and powerful data analysis. The project aims at creating a theoretical and experimental foundation of morphogenetic systems based on self-organizing and emergent behavior in biological neural nets and ensembles of nanomagnets. In the SOCRATES project the position will perform research and be part of the management in all the major work packages; modelling of neuron-based and nanomagnetic systems, investigating learning in self-organizing neural cultures, realization of self-organizing nanomagnet system, and exploration of computational capabilities of the targeted biological and nanomagnetic substrate.
The position will also include research and management on projects at IDI focused on unconventional computing, mainly: The NTNU Cyborg project targeting the realization of a hybrid biological-digital control system for a robot and evolution in materio based projects targeting nanosystems. Furthermore, the position will contribute towards applications for funding, national and international, in the area of unconventional computation.
The projects and work are mainly in the area of artificial life, artificial intelligence, complex systems and bio-inspired methods (e.g., artificial development and evolutionary algorithms). The nature of the described projects require that the position contribute to design and customization of research tools, including design and realization of hardware and software (low-level programing, FPGA design and PCB design).
The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree within computer science, electronics or equivalent. We require documented research in one or more of the following topics; Artificial life, artificial intelligence, complex systems or bio-inspired methods. The work requires good programming and hardware design skills.
The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications:
Experience with bio-inspired methods.
Experience with evolution in materio systems.
Experience with hybrid digital/analogue physical systems.
Experience with artificial neural networks.
Experience with cluster runtime systems.
Strong programming and system design skills.
Demonstrated research capability relevant to the position and preferably a strong publication record.
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
Demonstrated ability to quickly acquire knowledge in new topics.
We also require excellent written and oral communication skills. For candidates who are neither native English speakers nor from Scandinavia, the following tests can be used as documentation for English skills: TOEFL, Academic IELTS and Cambridge CAE or CPE.
Minimum scores are:
TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
CAE/CPE: grade B or A.
The applicant’s suitability to hold a scientific position will be emphasized in the selection process.
Appointments will be made in accordance with current university regulations. The successful applicant must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees and must sign a contract regulating the starting date and duration of employment. The positions adhere to the Norwegian Government’s policy of balanced ethnicity, age, and gender. NTNU wishes to increase the number of women in its workforce, and female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
The position is in code 1352 Post doctor, salary grade range from 57 – 72 in the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 490,500 – 649 800 per year (before tax), depending on qualifications.
Starting date for the position is preferably Mai-June 2018 and latest by August 2018.
