PhD position within Marine Machinery (IV-103/18)


The Department of Marine Technology has an open PhD position related to this topic:
- Experimental investigation of novel injection and combustion strategies for alternative marine fuels.

The strengthening of the emission regulations for international shipping as well as growing uncertainty in the future development of diesel oil price and its availability makes it essential to study the possibility of utilizing alternative fuels in maritime sector more extensively. The successful application of LNG, LPG, ethane and methanol for marine diesel engines has been demonstrated on commercial vessels, while number of biofuels have been verified in extensive laboratory and full-scale experiments where different injection strategies have been used. At the same time, there is still a substantial way to go for achieving optimum injection parameters like injection timing, injection duration, optimum number of injection holes, etc. Such studies require specially dedicated research installations, like for example Constant Volume Combustion Rigs (CVCR), where the effect of engine-affected parameters can be isolated, hence allowing to study injection and combustion properties of both gaseous and liquid fuels independently. Such large-volume CVCR is available at SINTEF/NTNU engine laboratory and is used for non-intrusive optical studies of injection and combustion processes applicable to marine diesel engines. The engine laboratory is also equipped with specially instrumented marine diesel engines that allows performing necessary full-scale verification tests based on CVCR findings.

The main goal of this project is to provide in-depth knowledge about the injection and combustion process behavior of alternative marine fuels like LNG, hydrogen, methanol, ammonia and biofuels of various feedstocks when utilized in large-volume diesel engines. Additional research interest is to optimize the injection/ignition strategy for multi-fuel high-pressure dual fuel (HPDF) diesel engine concept with special emphasis on pilot fuel injection. The obtained experimental results will be also used for tuning of simulation models of different fidelity (in cooperation with other PhD students), which would allow performing more detailed validation of different injection/combustion concepts with less experimental effort in future. As the experimental setup is unique and is still under the development, certain time should be allocated for the maintenance and upgrade (both in terms of hardware and software) of the test rig.

The described work is financed by the Norwegian Centre for improved energy efficiency and reduced harmful emissions (SFI Smart Maritime http://www.smartmaritime.no/ ) and will be performed in close cooperation with industry partners as for example RR Bergen Engines. The wiliness to contribute to archiving the main goals of the Centre, i.e. enabling the Norwegian cluster to be world leading in environmentally friendly shipping in 2025, is also desired from the candidate. The latter can be done by the enhancement of interdisciplinary cooperation between the researches within the Centre and by higher degree of openness of the research results to the public (not only through research channels, but also by using conventional mass-media sources as newspapers, TV and Internet).


The position requires relevant Master's degree in engineering science within the major fields: mechanical engineering, marine technology, energy and process technology or similar relevant area. The preferred candidate has a solid knowledge in energy conversion processes (thermodynamics, combustion, chemistry) and strong motivation for experimental work in laboratory. The knowledge/experience with diesel engines, marine machinery, measurement instrumentation and optics can be an advantage. It is essential that the successful candidate fulfill the requirement for admission to the doctoral program.

PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 436 900 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.

The position is of 3 years duration with no teaching duties.
