PhD position in development of model to evaluate effect of pore pressure build-up from pile installation on slope stability

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applicants for a three-year PhD fellowship within geotechnical engineering.

The position is a part of the RNC KPN-project BegrensSkade II (REMEDY) funded by the Norwegian Research Council. NTNU is partner in the REMEDY project, which is led by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI). REMEDY is a research project, which aims to reduce the risk for damage on neighboring buildings and structures (third party property) induced by ground and foundation works. The PhD-project is connected to one of the work packages and will report progress to the board twice each year.

The candidate is asked to develop a model for calculation of slope stability that accounts for the effects of pile driving and mass displacement, ie. remoulding of soil, excess pore pressures, soil displacement, change of principal total stresses etc. The aim is to incorporate the model in the Norwegian Geotechnical Society guidelines NGF Peleveiledning and NGF Kalksementveiledning.

Driven piles are commonly used for foundation of buildings and structures. Pile driving in the vicinity of slopes has been seen to trigger slope failure, or causing damaging displacements in slopes or excavations without complete failure.

Normally, to account for reduced stability, pore pressures are monitored during construction and limits are set on maximum allowable pressure levels to avoid slope failure. The costs for waiting time or for moving pile driving machines to different locations to allow for pore pressure dissipation, can be large.

In Norway, there is no standard method recognized by industry to account for reduction in safety factor for slope stability as an effect of mass displacement and pore pressure build-up. Several different methods have been suggested, but the actual effect of mass displacement on total and effective stress and soil strength is not well understood or agreed upon. Therefore, there is a strong need for developing a model, which accounts for pile installation effects in a reliable manner. The model to be developed in this PhD project should provide guidance on how to define requirements on allowable pore pressure buildup during construction.

The model should mainly be developed for driven piles.  If possible it should also be applicable to other types of groundworks causing soil displacement and pore pressure build-up such as installation of ground improvement (lime-cement and jet-stabilization) and drilled piles.

The work will be done in close cooperation with geotechnical  consultants and the Norwegian public road administration.
The position requires a Master’s degree in geotechnical engineering or similar relevant area. Interest and knowledge within both numerical modelling, field-testing and instrumentation will be an advantage.

The successful candidate should be enthusiastic and highly motivated and be willing to work both independently and with other researchers.

The candidate must fulfill the requirement for admission to a doctoral program, grade B or better in the Master’s degree.
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 436,500 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.
