University College of Southeast Norway was established 1 January 2016, and has about 18 000 students and about 1500 employees. The university college is organized in four faculties, with instruction and R&D activities on eight campuses. PhD Research Fellow in Eco-efficiency & Digitalisation of Ro-Ro Shipping & Logistics

The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a position as Research Fellow in Eco-efficiency & Digitalisation of Ro-Ro Shipping & Logistics.

The position is affiliated with the Department of Maritime Operations and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Vestfold in Horten.

Qualifications
Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree or equivalent higher education qualifications in maritime, economics, logistics, management or engineering. According to the formal PhD regulations, an average grade B or better from the Master’s degree, in addition to a grade B or better of the final master project, is required. The applicant must have gained the degree within the application deadline.

It is a requirement that the successful applicant is granted admission to the university’s doctoral programme in Nautical Operations. Admission to the doctoral programme is a condition for appointment as a research fellow.

The PhD student should ideally have some familiarity with shipping and logistics operations beforehand, and be familiar with both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

The staff at the faculty work within subject teams to a large extent, and the candidate must be motivated to share his or her knowledge and cooperate. Personal suitability for the position will be emphasized.

Applicants are required to provide evidence of fluent English language skills, written and spoken. Applicants outside the Scandinavian educational system may use the following tests as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

Information about the position
The PhD project will be conducted as part of the ECOPRODIGI project (http://ecoprodigi.eu/) where University College of Southeast Norway (HSN) in collaboration with +20 partners are exploring options for achieving ECO-efficiency targets through further digitalization of the Baltic sea area shipping industry.

The research scope of this research effort will likely be the Baltic Sea Ro-Ro shipping segment and purpose will be to explore and evaluate opportunities for digitalizing the end2end cargo stowage process of Ro-Ro ferry operations and logistics, through action research in close collaboration with industry partners. Some of the key partners for this part of the project will be the Danish ferry operators DFDS and Island Ferries as well as software vendors as Logimatic, Kockumation etc.

The PhD work focus on digitization options and solution to improve the coordination of resources form selling organisation through freight forwarders, terminal, ship and the buying organisation to optimize the goods flow.

Having quantified extent of waste and value pools of improvements/solutions, it is planned for the PhD student to engage in co-development and testing of relevant digital technologies for data capture (sensors, cameras, mobile devices, weighing technologies etc.) for supporting digital supply chain integration and using decision support tools as (optimization models, visualization technologies etc.).

The PhD student is expected to engage in the development of training - and dissemination material for integration of maritime logistics chains through digital solutions, decision support systems, standards and processes. The PhD student will particularly be responsible for ensuring that a thorough cost benefit analysis is done for different digital solution proposals and that test / implementation results are tracked and lessons learned captured as basis for developing recommendations for further work / future initiatives in partner companies and for the Baltic Sea / EU shipping industry in general.

Development and testing work is to be done with a team of HSN senior researchers and partner institutions (AAU, SDU, SIMAC) as well as key stakeholders from ship operators / ferry companies, terminals and selected clients / haulage companies.

The appointment is for a term of three years without teaching duties. Four years with 25% teaching duties might be considered if very qualified or suitable candidates. Because the language of instruction is both in English and Norwegian, the successful applicant must be able to teach in English and one of the Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish).

Salary
PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 436 900 a year. Further promotion will be based on service in the position. In special cases, employment in code 1378 may be considered. Salary NOK 436 900 – 600 200 a year. A statutory contribution will be made from the employee’s salary to the state pension plan.

Additional information
Appointment to the position will be carried out by The Appointments Board for PhD Research Fellows. An expert assessment of applicants will be carried out. Short-listed candidates will be called in for interviews and must be prepared to present and discuss their projects.
