Post-doc in Maritime Human Factors
Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Business Administration and Social Sciences (FØS) has one available 50 % Post-doc position in maritime safety and human factors for three years. The Post-doc will be part of the maritime safety research group (MarSafe) of nautical studies.The place of employment is Haugesund, Norway.
On January 1st, 2017, Bergen University College, Sogn og Fjordane University College and Stord/Haugesund University College merged to form Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. With about 16,000 students, it is one of the largest higher educational institutions in Norway. A broad range of academic programmes is offered at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. Our ambition is to build stronger and more solid academic and research environments that will interact nationally and internationally. The aim is to become a recognized actor on the international higher education arena. Increased international cooperation and engagement in externally funded projects will work towards this goal.
This position is part of the research project HUMANE, a project addressing many of the human aspects and non-technical issues of autonomous shipping. Within the emerging technical and business scenarios, this project seeks to answer four important open questions that are at present not well addressed. They are the human and operational components in relation to 1. Hardware reliability & cyber security, 2. Skill sets, 3. Legal implications and 4. Organisational & job design issues. We need technical systems that do not need maintenance and repairs. We also need to ensure protection and validity of data stored, communications, configuration, and data collected can all be addressed by suitable, available hardware solutions and some software licences. There is almost no research on which skills and competence will be needed, but assumptions centre on 'some kind of maritime degree'. We are still unclear on what the legal implications will be on a global scale, but this is presently being worked around by opting for unmanned vessels in national waters with more allowing regulatory frameworks. However, these waters will be trafficked by leisure and commercial craft of all types, and will need negotiations to manage safe co-use of the water. Finally, and intrinsically linked to the previous issues, is the organisation of work, the roles of staff and their locations in the system.
Key duties- and responsibilities:
• Conceive, lead, and support efforts to understand, evaluate, and improve human interaction, collaboration and teaming with autonomous systems.
• Develop, support, and potentially lead team in research in human interaction, collaboration, and teaming with autonomous systems.
• Lead, support relevant research within human cognition and behavior, hardware functionality, reliability, maintainability and availability, organization and knowledge management and requirements, information management, classification and legal requirements and safety.
• Conduct research, applying relevant methods within quantitative and qualitative studies, assess data, interpret and form conclusions.
• Lead and facilitate workshop packages, with stakeholders from authorities, industry, academia, research councils, and end users.
• Work with partner organizations to communicate research knowledge.
• Write scientific manuscripts and whitepapers summarizing results for conferences and peerreviewed journals.
• Ph.D. Degree in the possible following areas - Human Factors Engineering, Human Systems Engineering, Engineering Psychology, Organizational or Social Psychology.
• Multidisciplinary knowledge is key.
• In depth experience with applying human factors philosophy, concepts, and approach in academic and industrial setting, developing a variety of research methods and protocols- both quantitative (i.e. lab setting, survey) and qualitative (i.e. field, observations interviews), data management recognizing business and industry needs and bridging these to multiple stakeholders.
• Working knowledge within academia and industry, large meeting facilitation, established knowledge in relevant maritime and related regulations, international network, direct work with end users, and communication and marketing of results across multiple stakeholders.
• Project management leadership is a requirement.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to articulate complex technical issues effectively and appropriately for a wide range of audiences.
• Familiarity in overarching and detailed understanding of data, goals and aims.
• National and international communication acumen is key.
• Research experience in multiple industries is useful and relevant within human interaction and collaboration with complex or intelligent systems human and human-machine systems.
• Work experience with addressing rules and regulations, cooperation with government and regulatory authorities, ship owners and operators, classification societies, designers and academia.
• Qualification, experience and knowledge within organizational management and communication philosophies and concepts, distributed decision-making, decision support tools, automation, information management.
• Ability to work alone
• Ability to work in small and large groups
• Ability to work among multiple discipline experts.
The appointment board is Faculty of Business Administration and Social Sciences (FØS) at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. Applicants to scientific positions must be assessed by an expert committee. An expert committee consist of three members regulated by the FOR-2006-02-09-129. Based upon the expert committee’s evaluation and recommendation, the applicants will be invited for an interview and trial lecture.
The position is remunerated according to the state salary scale, code 1011/1198, scale 57-72 / NOK 486 100-643 924,8. A 2% compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted. The successful applicant must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at any time.
