2 Post doctor positions in the field of Li-ion batteries

Two post doc positions in the field of Li-ion batteries are available at the Department of Material Science and Engineering.

Both positions (2 years and 5 months each) are part of the project Bio-degradable Li-ion battery anodes (BioBatt), which is funded by the Research Council of Norway. BioBatt focuses on developing a new type of anode for Li-ion batteries, based on naturally occurring silica. One of the post doc projects will work mostly on fundamental studies of the silica anodes by investigating variations in performance based on morphology and surface area as well as performing in situ and post mortem characterization. The goal is to gain a better understanding of the charge/discharge mechanisms and degradation behavior.

The second post doc project will focus on optimization of the silica anodes for full-cell implementation. This includes fine-tuning of the contents of the electrodes and the electrode production procedure as well as running extensive tests on full cells using commercially available cathodes. It will be important for both post doc candidates to work closely together in order to be successful. This project also has an interdisciplinary approach and involves a significant activity on responsible research and innovation, which will be lead by Professor Marianne Ryghaug from the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture. The two post docs will be required to keep in close contact with Prof. Ryghaug and a post doc dedicated to this project.
 
The applicants must hold a PhD in electrochemistry, materials science or other relevant related field. Experience with electrochemical characterization of Li-ion battery electrodes, or similar chemistries, is considered advantageous. This includes, but is not limited to, cyclic voltammetry, ac impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic cycling. Experience with material characterization techniques like SEM/EDS, TEM, XRD and BET will also be highly considered. Since cross disciplinary work is essential for the success of this project, it is considered positive if the candidate can demonstrate experience in similar work environments. 

For both positions, the work will be conducted at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Post doc will be part of a group conducting research in the field of Li-ion and Mg-ion batteries, as well as other electrochemical storage technologies.

The candidate must document ability to work independently and in groups, possess good communication skills and be fluent in both written and spoken English. The appointment of the Post doc will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.

The position as postdoctoral researcher is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2 % deduction for superannuation contribution.
