PhD position “Gas-phase synthesis and characterization of biocompatible 2D van-der-Waals materials”

A PhD position within experimental nanotechnology is available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Description
In the project, 2D boron nitride (BN) will be grown using gas phase methods. Mono- and multi- layered films will be synthesized by PLD method and in-situ modified by implanting energetic charged atomic-nanoclusters of plasmonic materials. The atomic-nanoclusters will be produced using a sputtering based inert-gas-condensation method. Advanced techniques of characterization will be used to optimize the process. The modified BN will be evaluated as a multimodal contrast agent for simultaneous magnetic and photon based bio-imaging. The work will be based at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and NTNU NanoLab. Short stays at the Institute of Material Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) are planned for the magnetic characterization.

Qualifications
We are seeking a highly-motivated candidate to join our team. She/he should have good communication skills and be able to collaborate with other PhD candidates and international researchers.

The candidate must hold a Master degree or equivalent degree within Nanotechnology, Materials Science, Physics or a related field. Prior experience with modern charged particle optical systems (for example FIB, SEM), nanostructuring, gas phase synthesis technique (PVD and/or CVD), or the targeted application area is seen as advantageous.

The regulations for PhD programs at NTNU state that the applicant must have a master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best). The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test.
