PhD position in Scouring and Flow around Offshore Wind-Turbine Foundations (IV-207/17)

A PhD position in Fluid Dynamics is available at Department of Energy and Process Engineering. The position is financed by NTNU Energy. The vacant position is part of a joint research program between NTNU in Trondheim and Tsinghua University in Beijing on “Scouring and Flow around Offshore Wind-Turbine Foundations”.

Scour is a threat for safe and persistent operations of offshore wind turbines and may occur when a wind turbine foundation is placed on an erodible bed and surrounded by turbulent water.  The project aims to achieve a deep understanding of how a scour hole forms, how the scour and near-seabed turbulent flow structures affect the foundation, as well as how sediments are transported and concentrated around the foundation. Computer-based direct numerical simulations (DNS) integrated with a mathematical modelling approach for sand particles developed for process engineering purposes will be carried over to marine sciences.

The applicant must hold a master degree in engineering science or physics, including relevant courses in fluid mechanics above the introductory level. Motivation for scientific research of practical relevance is essential. Genuine interest in flow physics, mathematical modeling, and computer simulations is a prerequisite. Earlier experience with numerical simulations of fluid flow problems is required, as well as knowledge about numerical programming. Use of commercial CFD packages is not particularly relevant for this position. A good command of English (oral and in writing) is also required, as well as the ability to co-operate with international partners, notably at Department of Engineering Mechanics at Tsinghua University.

PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 436 900 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.

The appointment has a duration of 3 years as a researcher towards the degree of PhD. Depending on the candidate’s preferences and qualifications, the position duration could be changed to 4 years with a 25% teaching duty for the Department throughout the employment period.
