PhD and Post Doctor fellowships available for research work on onboard hydrogen generation system

Two positions are available with the Department of Chemical Engineering, one PhD and one Post Doctor. The appointment of the PhD candidate has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of a 1-year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department (to undertake the teaching duties it is a requirement that the candidate speaks Norwegian or another Scandinavian language). The appointment of the Post Doctor fellowship has a duration of 2 years.

The positions are financed by the strategic area of energy, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, with cooperation with Chinese universities.

The research activity at the Department is extensive, and is organized in research groups. These are Biorefinery and fibre technology, Catalysis, Colloid and polymer chemistry, Environmental Engineering and reactor technology and Process systems engineering. About the positions

This is a cooperative project between NTNU and Tsinghua university to develop sustainable hydrogen supply for fuel cell vehicles with zero CO2 emission. The project covers the production of ethanol and water mixture from dry fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass such as sugarcane and woody biomass, and an on-board hydrogen generation system from a bioethanol-water mixture with a hydrogen purity suitable for various fuel cell applications. 

A: PhD fellowship in catalysis for onboard hydrogen generation from bioethanol

This project deals with the development of new technology for onboard hydrogen generation from bioethanol for PEM fuel cells. As part of a larger project the candidate will work with the development of catalysts and compact reactors for steam reforming of bioethanol and catalytic combustion and selective methanation (including catalyst preparation and characterization, and kinetic studies) at low temperatures. We are looking for a candidate with a background in catalysis and chemical engineering, with solid practical skills as well as some knowledge in modelling.

B: Postdoctoral fellowship in compact reactors for onboard hydrogen generation

The project deals with the development of catalysts and efficient systems for an onboard hydrogen generation system including reactor design, process design and evaluation using bioethanol. A compact reactor system will be developed, including integrating the endothermic reforming reaction with the exothermic combustion reaction, selective methanation as well as PEM fuel cells.

The work is mainly experimental by nature, and we are looking for candidates with strong experimental skills and experience. Typical tasks will include material preparation and characterization, as well as activity testing, and kinetic studies of reforming reactions and catalytic combustion, compact reactor design and testing. The successful candidates should have a background in heterogeneous catalysis, chemical reaction engineering, or physical chemistry related to kinetics/thermodynamic analysis.

The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree:

The successful candidate for the Post Doctor position should be independent, creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams, and have enthusiasm for working in collaboration between theoretic and experimental groups. You should have well-established skills to experimental work and reactor modeling.

Both positions requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

Terms of employment

The appointments will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants for the PhD position must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study.

NTNU’s personnel policy objective is that the staff must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent.

The positions are remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
