A two-year Post Doctoral position
A position as Post Doctor in “Design, Modeling and Implementation of Advanced Control Techniques for Power Take-off Systems in Wave Energy Converters”
The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, http://www.ntnu.edu/ie at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a 100% position as Post Doctor at the Department of Electric Power Engineering (IEL) http://www.ntnu.edu/elkraft.
The Post Doctor position (for 2 years) is within the topic “Design, Modeling and Implementation of Advanced Control Techniques for Power Take-off Systems in Wave Energy Converters” and is part of the Horizon 2020 IMAGINE project, led by the company Umbra Group. The IMAGINE project targets an innovative method for affordable generation in ocean energy, through the realization of innovative power take-off systems and control strategies for wave energy converters.
Information about the department
Currently there are 13 professors and 4 associate professors at the department. In addition, there are 6 adjunct professors, 4 postdoctoral researchers, approx. 30 PhD students and 15 technical/administrative staff. Research activities are organized into two groups: Power systems and Power Technology.
The department has a wide range of teaching responsibilities, ranging from fundamental education in electric power engineering for other engineering students, Master's programs in Energy and Environment, International MSc programs within Electric Power Engineering and Wind Energy, as well as PhD education and continuing education.
The Post Doctor candidate will work on identifying the most suitable Power Take-Off control strategies in constrained conditions, to optimize the overall power performance of a specific Electro-Mechanical Generator, designed in cooperation with the project partners. Building integrated and flexible simulation models (e.g. in Matlab/Simulink) suitable for the subsequent Hardware-in-the-Loop implementation of the proposed concepts is an important part of the task.
Applicants must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) within a relevant engineering field and have specific competence on control of wave energy conversion systems. A good background in one or several of the following areas is required: electrical engineering, control engineering, ocean energy, wave-to-wire modelling, power electronics, multi-domain simulations.
Excellent analytical and communication skills are required.
Programming and experimental skills are merited. In particular, experience with Hardware-in-the loop testing and the OPAL-RT platform is an advantage.
The candidates must have an ability to work independently as well as in teams.
Applicants currently enrolled in a PhD programme who expect to pursue the PhD degree before the date of appointment must forward documentation for the date of their final exam.

Appointments are made in accordance to the regulations in force regarding terms of employment for Post Doctor candidates issued by the Ministry of Education and Research, with relevant parts of the additional guidelines for appointment as a Post Doctor candidate at NTNU. The person who is appointed must comply with the conditions that apply at any time to employees in the public sector. In addition, a contract will be signed regarding the period of employment.
Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
CAE/CPE: grade B or A.
The Post doctor position is in code 1352 Research fellow, salary grade range from 57 in the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 490.900 per year, depending on qualifications. A deduction of 2% is made as a statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
