PhD position on Energy Planning of Urban Building (IV-199/17)

A PhD position is available on the ExPOSe project (Methods for Transparent Energy Planning of Urban Building Stocks), at Department of Energy and Process Engineering (http://www.ntnu.edu/ept), Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The project is a collaboration between the Energy and Indoor Environment group (https://www.ntnu.edu/ept/energy-environment), who has a well-established expertise in energy supply systems and building energy services, and the Industrial Ecology Programme (http://www.ntnu.edu/indecol), who is one of the leading international research groups on environmental systems analysis and impact assessment modelling. The groups are strongly involved in the Norwegian Research Centre on Zero Emission Buildings (ZEB) (http://www.zeb.no) and a follow-up Research Centre on Zero Emission Neighborhoods (ZEN), as well as various national and international projects, such as H2020 projects, IPCC reports, IEA Tasks or EBC Annexes.

About the ExPOSe project

The ExPOSe project aims to develop methods for long-term energy planning of urban building stocks, with definition of data framework, building energy simulations with dynamic building stock modeling, and scenario analysis under different analysis approaches. Reliable energy pathways will be explored, taking into account building stock structural changes, flexibility, smart solutions, onsite renewable energy generation, energy import/export with the energy grids, and user behavior. The project includes two PhD positions plus researcher working time at NTNU and international collaboration.

Work description

The PhD student position announced here is about top-down modelling of how global emission requirements effect technical building requirements. This means to evaluate which structural changes are necessary and when to introduce them to enable society transition to renewable energies. The research work will also include modelling and analysis of the energy supply solutions for the building stocks based on the load profiles defined within the project. Different energy supply strategies and interaction with energy grids will be analyzed. The results should be organized in an energy pathway’s database. Since the database and the bottom-up model are very complex, advanced statistical tools and data mining techniques will be used to give answers how to develop technical building requirements. The work will be developed in collaboration with researchers and other PhD and MSc students, and it will be linked to the FME ZEN Centre. The candidate will also collaborate with the international partners from Politecnico di Torino, Italy, and Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. The plan is that the candidate should spent about six months at Zhejiang University.

Qualifications
Applicants have to strictly address the following selection criteria:

  • A highly motivated candidate with a Master's degree (or equivalent) within HVAC systems for buildings, energy engineering, quantitative industrial ecology, or related fields.

  • High-level knowledge in one of the following areas: a) District heating, HVAC systems and energy use in buildings, including tools relevant for the building performance modelling and simulation (e.g. IDA-ICE or EnergyPlus), or b) Quantitative industrial ecology, including tools relevant for the study of materials and energy flows and conversion and their associated environmental impacts (e.g. material flow analysis (MFA), and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA)).

  • Good mathematical knowledge and analytical skills, with experience in generic computational tools, such as MATLAB or similar, and preferably with experience in big data analysis and energy planning.

  • High level of personal responsibility, initiative, ability to work in a team and independently, and good communication skills. Written and oral proficiency in English is a requirement, and good skills in a Scandinavian language is an advantage.

  • In order to be accepted to NTNU’s PhD programme, the candidate must meet the requirement of an average weighted Grade B or better (ECTS grading system) from the MSc degree. Applicants from China have to provide transcripts verified by China Academic Degree & Graduate Education Information Centre (CDGDC).

Conditions
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 432,300 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.

The position is of 3 years duration.
