PhD Candidates in Psychology
There are two positions available at the Department of Psychology as PhD Candidate in Work and organizational psychology or Human Factors for a period of 3 years. These are educational positions that shall provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD. The positions will be connected to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences and the faculty will be your employer.
The Department of Psychology currently has approximately 110 employees and 1100 students. The Department holds a large and diverse research community covering a variety of disciplines within psychology, and offers studies at the bachelor-, master- and PhD level in addition to a study programme in clinical psychology. In addition, the Department participates in extensive local, national and international research collaborations. Our research ambition is to be internationally and nationally leading in various disciplines of psychology.
The PhD positions are embedded in a larger project called “Immersive Visual Technologies for Safety-critical Applications” (ImmerSAFE). The Immersafe project will include 15 PhD candidates in five countries (Finland, Croatia, Italy, Norway, and Sweden). The PhD positions are open for all nationalities. The recruited PhD candidates will interact extensively with the 14 partners in the project and the PhD candidates will do part of their research for up to 3 months at two of the partners.
The project is funded by EU, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, Innovative Training Network (ITN) Call H2020-2017. The purpose of the ImmerSAFE project is to a) develop new imagining technology; b) determine how new imagining technology is optimal implemented in challenging conditions and how it integrates into existing solutions and framework, in mobile, industry machines and emergency response; c) increase knowledge about the organizational and human factors affecting the adoption and use of advanced technology in safety-critical applications. The PhD positions announced here relate to goal c.
The two PhD positions will be connected to separate research questions, and the applicants should note in the application if they are interested in one or both of these projects:
One of the PhD positions will study how immersive visual technology (IVT) affects human performance and safety by human factor analyses, simulations and experiments. Relevant topics are for example how IVT affect situation awareness, workload, performance, human errors, teamwork, communication, decision-making and training. This project will use both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
The other PhD position will study organizational factors that are affected by implementing IVT. Topics that will be studied are acceptance and decisions about implementation IVT in organization, optimal change processes for implementing IVT, and how organizations change and adapt to use of IVT after it is implemented. This project will mainly use qualitative research methods.
Employment will be activated in accordance with existing regulations of 31.01.06 (in English: http://www.uhr.no/documents/Regulations_Post_doctoral_and_research_fellow.pdf). The requirement for the position is a completed master’s degree in Work and organizational psychology or Human factors or education of equivalent type and level. Applicants must have a strong academic record from their previous studies, and must have a weighted average grade for the last two years of their master's or equivalent education (equivalent to 120 credits) of B or higher in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be admitted only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.
Applicants shall, at the time of recruitment, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree that would formally entitle him/her to embark on a doctorate.
H2020 MSCA Mobility Rule: at the time of recruitment by the host organization, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization (Norway) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention (the 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1967 Protocol) are not taken into account.
Fluent English skills, orally and written, are required.
The following will be emphasized in the evaluation of applicants:
- Prior academic work and experience
- Personal qualifications such as conscientiousness, cooperation skills and motivation
Payment and Working Conditions
The PhD position is paid according to salary level 50 in the national salary scheme, gross minimum NOK 432.300 per year, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension Scheme. Mobility fees according to the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, Innovative Training Network (ITN) regulations, are added to the salary.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The employee is expected to accept possible changes in work tasks. Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite. In addition, it is a requirement to conduct research stays of up to 3 months each at two of the partners.

Joint work will be evaluated. If it is difficult to identify the contributions from individuals in a joint piece of work, applicants should enclose a short descriptive summary of what he/she contributed to the work.
