The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) creates knowledge for a better world and solutions that can change everyday life.

Postdoc Position in Linguistics at the Department of Language and Literature

The Department of Language and Literature at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications from qualified individuals for a 3-year postdoc position within the research group AcqVA (Acquistion, Variation & Attrition).

The Department
The Department of Language and Literature (ISL) is part of the Faculty of Humanities, situated at Dragvoll campus in Trondheim. The Department has more than 80 permanent academic staff and approximately 20 PhD candidates who teach and conduct research in areas such as Comparative Literature, Applied Linguistics, English, French, German, Scandinavian languages and literature, General Linguistics, Sign Language and Interpretation Phonetics, and Cultural History. The Department of Language and Literature offers studies on all levels from BA to Ph.D., and we are responsible for the MA in Language Studies with Teacher Education.  The department has a vital research environment and is responsible for several large-scale research projects. Further information concerning the academic profile of the department, management and staff can be found at http://www.ntnu.edu/isl.

The AcqVA group (http://site.uit.no/acqva/) is a joint research group between UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø and NTNU in Trondheim. The Trondheim unit of the group consists of 18 researchers, including 3 professors, 4 associate professors, 1 postdoc, 8 PhD candidates, and 1 20% adjunct professor. The group is currently in the process of recruiting a new Phd candidate. The group members are involved in a number of research projects both locally and internationally, many of which have received external funding.

Changes in states of linguistic knowledge, be it in development (acquisition) or possible erosion over the lifespan (attrition), examined across complementary populations and multiple language combinations (variation), provide crucial knowledge about the organization of mental grammars. AcqVA conducts research based on real-life situations, reflecting today’s globalized world where learning multiple languages at various points in the lifetime has become increasingly common. AcqVA’s vision is to provide groundbreaking data and novel theories that will substantially increase our understanding of how mental grammars may vary, how they develop in children and adults, and change under conditions of reduced input and use.

In Trondheim, research has centered around understanding variation in closely related varieties. The main focus to date has been on various aspects of language variation, heritage grammars (in particular word order and code switching/language mixing) and increasingly on language acquisition, including L2 and some emerging work on L3. In addition, members now also work on sentence processing of several different phenomena. The group actively uses a range of different methodologies in studying mental grammars (acceptability judgments, corpora, eye-tracking). The ØyeLab run by Associate Professor Dave Kush is part of AcqVA’s research infrastructure and has an SR Research EyeLink 1000 eye-tracker and a number of personal computers suitable for behavioral testing. In terms of languages, the main focus is on varieties of Norwegian and English, but work also covers Hindi-Urdu, Dakkhini and Telugu. The advertised postdoc position opens up for research projects on the same or other relevant language or dialect combinations.

Main Tasks
- to research and write journal articles relating to the main themes of the chosen candidate’s research project
- to help organize the activities of the research group
- to help develop an online presence for the research group

The postdoc will also be involved in coordinating the activities of the research group. Among others, this includes organizing weekly lunch seminars.
