A temporary 3 year, full time (100%) PhD position is open for an outstanding candidate to investigate the function of motile cilia-mediated flow in the nervous system of zebrafish. The candidate is expected to start in Spring 2018.

 

Institute and lab:

The research project will take place at the world-renowned Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience, in Trondheim, Norway. The Kavli Institute is directed by Prof. May-Britt Moser and Prof. Edvard Moser, Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine in 2014. The position is available in the Yaksi group, under the supervision of Nathalie Jurisch-Yaksi. Our laboratory consists of an international team of enthusiastic biologists, medical doctors and engineers. Our main scientific goal is to understand the fundamental principles underlying the function and development of neural circuits in health and disease. Project description:

We are searching for a highly motivated PhD student whose main goal will be to unravel the function of motile-cilia-generated flow in the nervous system of zebrafish larvae. The PhD student will use a wide range of microscopy, computational, fluid dynamics and biophysical approaches to characterize ciliary beating and flow in vivo and in brain explants. In addition, the candidate will use genetic, optogenetic and pharmacological approaches to monitor and manipulate ciliary beating in vivo and identify the consequences of impaired ciliary beating on brain function.

 

Requirements:

-          Master’s degree in Neuroscience, with an average grade of B or higher (A to E grading system; A highest)

-          Prior research experience on neuroscience and cell biology is required

-          Technical skills including the use of zebrafish as animal model, microscopy techniques (confocal and       2photon microscopy), and programming skills in Matlab are required

-          Felasa C certification

-          Proficiency in spoken and written English and excellent communication skills, oral and written

-          Strong motivation for the position, and proven ability to work independently as well as in a scientific team

 

Emphasis will be placed on:

-          Technical skills in molecular biology, immunostaining and genetics will be advantageous

-          Prior experience in cilia biology and fluid dynamics is beneficial

Depending on qualifications and academic background, PhD Candidates (in code 1017) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences will be remunerated at a minimum of NOK 436 500 per year before tax. Normal wage level is NOK 436 500 - 499 200 of which 2% is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

 

The appointment will be made in accordance with current regulations and supplementary rules with guidelines for employment as PhD Candidate appointments at universities and university colleges.
