Professor/Associate Professor in Timber Structures (IV-188/17)

NTNU – Faculty of Engineering and Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering at Gjøvik announces a position as a Professor/Associate professor in Civil Engineering: with focus on: Design of timber structures, focusing on wood based elements for automated manufacturing.

Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering is located at NTNU Campus Gjøvik and has an educational and research profile which will contribute to solutions for of the global societies’ central challenges within the area of sustainable solutions in industry and society. One of this challenge is the use of timber in both large and smaller structures in close cooperation with the industry.

The Department has at present 8 professors, 28 associate professors, 6 in other academic positions and 13 research fellows. The Department is responsible for the following disciplines: Construction Management, Renewable Energy, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Technology Design, Management, and Sustainable Manufacturing. The research activities are divided into several research groups; Sustainable Manufacturing, Bioplastics/Bio composites, Renewable energy, Digitalization of building processes. Research within “industrialized and sustainable wood building” is a new priority.

The candidate will be responsible for research and teaching within the area assigned to the research group Civil Engineering, within design of timber structures. This will particularly focus on wood-based elements for automated manufacturing, using digital technology in all levels. She/he will have to generate national and international funding as well as supervise doctoral candidates and publish research in scientific journals. The work language is English, but our goal is that you master the Norwegian language after some time.

Gjøvik is one of three main towns bordering Norway's biggest lake, Mjøsa. The two counties surrounding Mjøsa form the “Innlandet” region. Gjøvik is located 93 km north of Oslo Airport and 123 km from Oslo, the capital of Norway. The Gjøvik-region, with nearly 70.000 inhabitants, is the technological and industrial centre of Innlandet, and one of the leading centres in Norway. The forest- and wood industry in Norway has its stronghold in Innlandet. In February 2017 eight leading wood-mechanical and –building companies in Innlandet and Norway, together with NTNU, formed Norwegian Wood Cluster (NWC). In the cluster, the entire value chain is represented and the member companies have NOK 15 billion in turnover and 4,500 employees. Moelven Industrier ASA is leading member of the cluster and a leading Scandinavian wood-mechanical corporation. The vision for the cluster is "to develop an internationally leading cluster in industrialized and sustainable wooden building."

The department has a broad cooperation with regional and national industrial clusters and business. In addition to the Norwegian Wood Cluster this particularly includes the Raufoss cluster (Norwegian Centre of Expertise) and Sintef Raufoss Manufacturing (SRM). This is a national centre for advanced manufacturing industry within defence-/space- and automotive industries.

Your qualifications:
We are looking for candidates who are dedicated to research and have the ability and desire to build a strong research team. The position provides a large degree of independence of which direction she/he wants to focus her/his research and teaching activities. The position is part of a long-term strategic plan to build a strong, sustainable research team.

The candidate should have competence in the following areas:

  • Engineering mathematical skills at least on MSc level.
  • Knowledge about and experience in design of timber structures according to the Eurocodes
  • Knowledge about digital representation of geometry and physical properties in automated production.

The candidate is preferred to have competence in the following areas:

  • Knowledge about robot technology, CNC tools and optimization of production lines in wood-mechanical industry.
  • Proven track recording initiating and managing research and development work
  • Experience from laboratory work and physical experience
  • Teaching experience within design and production of timber structures
  • Experience from working with and in industry
  • Considerable international network in academia and industry

The successful applicant for a professorship must be able to document his/her extensive disciplinary qualifications in important fields within the discipline. His/her individual work must document scientific expertise in one or more parts of the discipline, particularly the specialist fields the Professorship has specific responsibility for. Weight will be placed on the ability to supervise and initiate research and development work.
 
Weight will be placed on pedagogical skills. The evaluation of the candidate will be based on documented pedagogical material, including pedagogical education/training, the presentation of academic work, experience from supervising masters-level students and doctoral candidates, and teaching as well as other pedagogical matters. The evaluation will consider both the quality and the scope.

Academic staff who are employed without having a formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching and are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of taking the appointment. The University offers such courses.
 
The applicants that have been short-listed will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their pedagogical ability, usually in the form of a trial lecture.
 
The Professor is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff in the Department. The Professor is required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing the teaching programme, including continuing education. The Professor is to supervise masters and bachelor students, research fellows and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline. The Professor must agree to participate in administrative work.

The Professor is obliged to follow the regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at the University.
It is assumed that newly-employed staff in academic positions who do not already master a Scandinavian language are to obtain within three years knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Language and Literature. The University provides such courses.

The position as professor is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 679 800 per annum. Normally the position is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 679 800 to NOK 901 700 per annum.

The position as associate professor is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 563 100 per annum. Normally the position is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 563 100 to NOK 666 900 per annum.

There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.
