PhD position - Natural Working Fluids and Mixtures - Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop in Pipes (IV-183/17)

Description
A PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) within the Refrigeration research group on the topic of "Natural Working Fluids and Mixtures - Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop in Pipes ".

The Refrigeration research group has long term expertise and a well-established network within of vapor compression systems, applying natural working fluids for various applications within different industrial sectors. In close cooperation with SINTEF, the group is involved in several national and international research projects in collaboration with the industry. This PhD position will be a part of the newly established research center “FME HighEFF” – Energy efficient and competitive industry for the future.

The background for the research work is the need to improve the design and calculation tools for evaporators and condenser in compact low charge refrigeration system to improve the energy efficiency. 

The international phase out of the HFC’s require new competence on natural working fluids heat transfer and pressure drop in low change systems. The knowledge of heat transfer in small pipes diameters, in compact heat exchangers, have to be measure and new correlations to be develop, both under evaporation and condensation conditions. The work will be experimental with develop of empirical correlation for selected natural working fluids including mixtures, at small diameters, less than 6 mm, and implement correlation in heat exchanger simulation program and the reliability of the calculations should be verified by experiments.

Qualifications
We seek a highly motivated candidate with a Master's degree (or equivalent) within refrigeration and/or in energy engineering. The candidate should present a strong interest for laboratory work. The candidate should document competence in modelling and simulation of complex multi-physical systems including heat- and mass transfer. A prior and concrete experience with the aforementioned disciplines are considered as an advantage.

Excellent English skills, spoken and written are required. Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

Conditions
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 432,300 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.

The scholarship has a duration of 3 years.
