Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in ICT
The University of Agder invites applications for one full-time, fixed-term appointment as Postdoctoral Research Fellows in Information and Communication Technology for a period of two years, with possible contract extension. This position is currently located in Grimstad, Norway. The starting date is as soon as possible or to be negotiated with the faculty.
The herein announced position will be part of a recently established Lab, namely, the Intelligent Signal Processing & Wireless Networks (WISENET) Lab, whose activities span across both the Department of Information and Communication Technology and the Department of Engineering. The WISENET Lab has a strong expertise in a range of areas, among them Data Analytics, In-Network Processing and Distributed Intelligence, Wireless Communications, Networked Cyber-Physical Systems and Embedded Systems, having led a number of large research projects funded by the Research Council of Norway, the EU research Programmes FP7 and H2020, as well as national and international industries. The WISENET Lab is now in full expansion phase, having at the present seven PhD students and four postdoctoral researchers, working on different cutting-edge research projects such as FRIPRO TOPPFORSK, SFI, PETROMAKS and INFRASTRUCTURE Projects, among others. The WISENET Lab is committed to achieving international research excellence, please see the notes about prospective postdoctoral researchers at WISENET before applying. The research environment is interdisciplinary and involves collaboration with industrial partners. The research in WISENET features a wide scope, with part of the researchers focused on theoretical research and algorithm development and another part focused on prototyping with real hardware.
The vision of a postdoctoral research position is as an intermediate step in the research career following the completion of a PhD degree and preceding a faculty position in a university. For this reason, the WISENET Lab is committed to offer the suitable environment and activities that allow the postdoctoral researcher to (i) consolidate her/his research maturity, (ii) develop her/his teaching and advising skills, and (iii) build up a solid resume that facilitates her/his incorporation to the academia as an assistant or associate professor.
This postdoctoral position will be offered in the areas of user-driven wireless heterogeneous networks, in-network distributed graph signal processing, flexible spectrum management, and collective intelligence. Special attention will be devoted to the impact in several applications, such as communications in crowded and highly populated scenarios as well as emergency management.
Research topic for the postdoctoral position
Wireless networks are becoming more and more heterogeneous, involving very different types of devices, such as mobile terminals, wireless sensor nodes, Internet-of-Things devices or, more generally, networked cyber-physical systems. The main research topic for this postdoctoral position involves the theoretical foundations and efficient algorithm design for application & user driven heterogeneous networks that are self-automated, exploiting as much as possible local communications among devices. These networks should be able to organize themselves in highly adaptive node formations that can fully adjust their operation across the communication layers according to their interaction with the environment, energy availability, and, more importantly, based on the communication needs established by a collection of users. This requires devices with capabilities for local and autonomous coordination of space-time-frequency radio resources in a sufficiently flexible way, exploiting cooperation with other near-by devices by jointly optimized distributed sensing, local computation algorithms, and communication protocols.
Your research will investigate mathematical tools and algorithms from several fields, such as computational and stochastic geometry, low-rank subspace data modeling and sparse sampling, in-network distributed signal processing over wireless networks, machine learning, game theory and information theory. This research is motivated in part by the demanding needs in various applications, such as dense scenarios that are highly populated, situations related to emergency management or different types of proximity based services. As a result, these heterogeneous networks will provide a high responsiveness to changes in local radio activity, application layer connectivity needs and user activity patterns, as well as a drastic increase of spectral efficiency wherever needed.
The candidate should have a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunication Engineering, or similar. Having a PhD thesis in a related topic is a plus. It is desirable that the applicant has defended his/her doctoral thesis within the last five years. PhD students are also welcome to apply if their defense is scheduled for the next few months.
Solid understanding and experience in (some of) the following areas is a plus:
- statistical signal processing
- machine learning
- cognitive radio
- game theory
- information theory
- spectrum management and protocol design in wireless networks
- low-rank subspace data modeling, compressed sensing, and sparse sampling
- distributed computation over wireless networks and graph signal processing
- design and implementation of distributed algorithms for wireless sensor networks and/or wireless heterogeneous networks
- testbed implementation with sensor devices and wireless nodes
- programming in Matlab, C/C++ and Java.
Candidates should also have:
- scientific ambition
- motivation and strong interest in cutting-edge research
- good analytical and problem-solving skills
- team-working skills, creativity, and a proactive attitude
Publication of scientific papers in high impact journals and participation in first-class international conferences related to these topics will be taken into account positively, as well as previous participation in national and European projects related to the aforementioned topics.
We offer the opportunity to work in world-class research organization with an excellent research environment. You will collaborate with top scientists in your field and have excellent prospects for personal development in an innovative working environment for aspiring researchers.
Emphasis will be given to the applicant’s project description and its relevance in relation to ongoing research and teaching at the Faculty of Engineering and Science.
A high level of oral and written proficiency in English is required.
Short-listed applicants will be invited for interviews. With the applicant’s permission, UiA will also conduct a reference check before appointment.
Further provisions relating to the position as Post-Doctoral Research Fellow can be found in the Regulations Concerning Terms and Conditions of Employment for the Post of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Research Fellow, Research Assistant and Resident.
