The Department of Structural Engineering (KT), Faculty of Engineering (IV) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) announces one vacant PhD position in the field of multiscale modeling and characterization of metal and polymer interface for a period of four years with 25% teaching duties. The PhD position is financed by KT for the strategic collaboration with Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME) at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands.                                                                                                                                                         

The PhD candidate will work at NTNU Nanomechanical Lab (NML), part of Structural Mechanics group at KT.  NML currently has 2 professors, 2 adjunct professors, 19 PhD students, 4 post docs and 1 visiting PhD student, working on diverse topics related to Nanomechanics and interface mechanics in materials and energy applications. Recent research activities, publications, and highlights can be found in the homepage www.ntnu.edu/nml. NML offers multicultural, multidisciplinary and stimulating working environment with weekly Friday seminars given by either internal team members or international speakers, as well as well-established national and international scientific and industry network.

The main goal of the PhD project is to gain in-depth insights into the coupled mechanical, thermal and electrical behavior of metal and polymer interface system for novel and energy-efficient electrical interconnects. The project will collaborate with Norwegian industrial partner Conpart AS, and Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME) at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. The student will have one-year academic exchange at Delft University of Technology. The starting date is January 2018.

Applicants for the PhD position require a Master’s degree or equivalent in nanotechnology, material science, theoretical chemistry, or related fields. The successful applicants are motivated and ambitious students with excellent grades. Proficiency to carry out goal-oriented work, good skills to deliver oral and written presentation of research results,the applicants should be fluent in oral and written engslish and good cooperation abilities will be emphasized.

PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 432,300 per annum before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.

The position is of 4 years duration, of which 25% teaching duties
