Researcher in Learning Analytics

We have a vacancy for a permanent position as a Researcher at the new Centre for the Science of Learning & Technology (SLATE), Faculty of Psychology, to take a leadership role in supporting and further developing our research on learning analytics, in particular related to higher education.


The Faculty of Psychology offers professional education for psychologists, is responsible for the pedagogical training of the University of Bergen's own staff, contributes towards the pedagogical aspects of teacher training and offers degrees in a wide range of disciplines: child welfare, Gender and Development, health promotion work, pedagogics, psychology, work and organizational psychology and speech and language therapy. The faculty's main focus areas in respect of research are connected with health, learning, development-related research and basic research in its widest sense.



SLATE, an interdisciplinary learning sciences research Centre, opened in January 2016 and is hosted at the Faculty of Psychology. Currently, SLATE has three research clusters: Assessment Innovation for Learning; Big and Small Data in Education; and, Innovative Futures. SLATE collaborates with the Centre for Big Data at Uni Research Computing on an infrastructure for, and research on, big and small educational data. We collaborate nationally and internationally.


The Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research, and the University of Bergen, have financed SLATE as an R&D Centre for an initial period of 5 years (2016-2020) with the possibility for renewal. We are a dynamic and including milieu of 18 persons, including faculty, adjuncts, postdocs, PhD and Masters students, and administrators.


About the position

Higher educational institutions are gathering more and more data from different systems, including data from learning management systems, student registration, grading, learning tools, etc. These data can be used to support individual learners, instructors, departments and faculties, and the Institution’s leaders.  For example, students are interested in their own learning, instructors in their course design or student interactions, departments and faculties in their course offerings, and leadership in retaining students.


Currently we are initiating a local Institutional project on learning analytics in higher education (LA in HE) at the University of Bergen (we have hired 1 PhD working in the area of semantic technologies and educational data models).  In this project we will collaborate with the Big Data Centre at Uni Research Computing.


We also have 3 projects with other HE Institutions in Norway around the use of various data for learning analytics. Nationally, there is also a great interest in LA in HE, and there are a number of relevant initiatives (e.g., Standards Norge has a learning committee that has three sub-projects related to aspects of learning analytics; UNINETT, a national support for digitisation of higher education, has coordinated a national agreement for the use of LMS systems in HE and had as a condition the delivery of learning data from the systems for research and development, etc.) that we need to follow and to which we need to contribute.


The Researcher will also contribute to other SLATE projects and initiatives related to uses of data in education / training in schools, workplaces, and leisure.


Researcher duties

SLATE is involved in studies of learning analytics in schools, higher education, workplace, and informal learning settings. The successful candidate will have special responsibility for a cluster of projects related to higher education and will join the SLATE leader group. There is also the opportunity to participate in other centre projects. The position involves investigating funding opportunities, preparing proposals, leading and participating in research and analysis, presenting findings, and performing other research activities as appropriate. The opportunity will also include work with international projects. In addition to leading her or his own projects, the person filling this role will be expected to support other SLATE project leaders and mentor junior researchers. While there is no teaching responsibility, as a national competence centre SLATE has the mandate to develop teaching and training opportunities so the successful candidate will participate in the work as well.


Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D or the equivalent in information science, informatics, computer science, data science, statistics, psychology, educational psychology or related disciplines;
  • The applicants will have preferable held a PostDoc, research position, or faculty position related to learning analytics for at least 2 years after their Ph.D
  • Particular preference will be given to those that have worked with learning analytics for higher education, or with big data in education;
  • Demonstrated research track record with peer-reviewed publications, relative to experience, in an area relevant to the position;
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of an effective team;
  • Proficiency in written and oral English is required;
  • Willing to learn Norwegian within the first two years.

  • Salary at pay grade 64-70 upon appointment (Code 1109) on the government salary scale (equivalent to NOK 553 200 - 621 800 per year. Further promotions are made according to length of service in the position. For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered.
