PhD Position within Radar Altimetry (IV-166/17)

Description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering provides competence and technological solutions within the areas of civil and transportation engineering, structural engineering, water and wastewater engineering, and hydraulic engineering. Students and researchers graduating from our programs provide our partners with sustainable and competitive expertise, for application in both the public and private sectors.

We have an open PhD position related to the topic "Micro/Nano-satellite radar altimetry concept study as part of an integrated ocean observation system". NTNU Ocean finances the PhD position. NTNU Ocean is one of four designated strategic research areas at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Radar altimeters measure the sea surface height as well as wave height and wind speed, providing key information about the ocean. Past and recent altimetry missions equipped with altimeters oscillated between large spacecraft with more than 2000 kg mass and mini satellites with mass around 500 kg. It is anticipated that, within a few years, ocean will be observed by micro and nano-satellites with mass smaller than 50 kg. The main objective of this research is a conceptual study to investigate the feasibility of using micro and nano-satellites for ocean observation and to create a conceptual design. Applications can be sea-ice mapping, sea-ice thickness retrievals and wave height determination, or other marine applications. The ultimate goal is to form basis for a larger project where one or more micro/nano-satellites are built with radar altimetry sensor.

The present PhD project will be associated to NTNU Ocean, and will take advantage of collaboration with researchers at Department of Engineering Cybernetics and Department of Electronic Systems at NTNU.

Qualifications
The position requires a Master’s degree in geomatics engineering or similar relevant discipline, like electronics, with experience in working with radar data. The PhD position also requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic and highly motivated and be willing to work both independently and with other researchers. The successful candidate must fulfil the requirement for admission to the doctoral program at the Faculty of Engineering, NTNU.

Conditions

PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 432,300 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with "Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident", given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.

The position is of 3 years duration.
