The PhD position is for a fixed term, with the objective of completion of research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD candidate shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment. The position is affiliated with the research group in the Solid Earth Research Group at the Department of Geosciences.
The position’s field of research/research project and other duties
The research project covers the fields of ore geology, geochemistry and experimental petrology. The main goal of the project is to give a better insight into the origin and evolution of gabbro pegmatites and their role in formation of various types of ore deposits. The research will be focused to effects of the magmatic-hydrothermal transition, the melt viscosity and the cooling rate on the crystal size and on the partition of metals between mafic silicate melts, solid phases and magmatic fluids. The project represents a novel approach that combines the field and laboratory studies of natural-occurring pegmatites and associated ore deposits and experimental petrology studies.
The project includes three fieldwork campaigns in Northern Norway and laboratory work in Norway and abroad. The appointed candidate will work on the determination of forming conditions of three selected gabbro pegmatites using a wide spectrum of analytical methods (phase and textural analyses (XRD, SEM/EBSD), lithogeochemistry and mineral chemistry (XRF, SEM/EDS+WDS, LA-ICP-MS), fluid and melt inclusions studies (microthermometry, Raman spectroscopy, LA-ICP-MS analyses of individual inclusions). Piston-cylinder experiments will be used for testing of established pegmatite-forming processes in the P-T-X space. In addition, they will provide information on the chemical element partition between silicate melts and magmatic fluid and the effect of cooling rate on the crystal size and the chemical element partitioning between silicate melts and solid phases.
The successful candidate will dedicate 25% of her/his working time to duty work for the department. This may include teaching (e.g. supervision and evaluation of student exercises) at various levels.
Applicants must fulfil the requirements for admission to the faculty’s PhD programme, cf. Regulation for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. In addition, he/she must be able to document proficiency in English equivalent to Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification, refer to the website about PhD regulations at UiT. The successful candidate must have a Master degree or equivalent in geology with a strong background in geochemistry and petrology, and must have documented laboratory work experience associated with his/her master project. A hands-on experience with fluid and melt inclusion studies, thermodynamic modelling and/or experimental petrology is beneficial.
The research work will be performed in collaboration with national and international partners, and progress and results are expected to be presented at international conferences/workshops, as well as published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Therefore, a good command in English, both written and oral, is required. Applicants not able to communicate in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are required to learn Norwegian within a reasonable amount of time.
The project involves fieldwork in Northern Norway. It is expected that the successful candidate is able and willing to participate in physically demanding field campaigns of up to several weeks each year.
Willingness to longer visits at international and national partner institutions is expected. The project is carried out in collaboration with researchers in the US and the successful candidate must be able and willing to spend significant amounts of time for lab analyses, data analysis, and scientific collaboration abroad. The Faculty of Science and Technology encourages and supports stays abroad for PhD students. Experience with teaching, scientific publication, conference presentations, and grant applications will be regarded as positive.

The normal period of employment is four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year, distributed as 25 % of each year, shall be used for teaching or other duties for the university, cf. Guidelines for the research fellow’s duties.
A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the research fellow has already completed parts of his/her research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position (PhD Candidate, research assistant, or the like) in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.
Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

An expert committee will assess the applicants. During this assessment process, emphasis will be attached to the applicant’s potential for research as shown by:
- Master’s thesis or equivalent
- any other academic works
- professional references
In addition, the committee will consider work experience or other activities of significance for the implementation of the PhD studies, and to any teaching qualifications. This includes teaching education, teaching experience, experience from popularization and other types of dissemination. Information and material must be submitted by the stipulated deadline to be considered during the assessment.
The applicants who are assessed as the best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview shall among other things aim to clarify the applicant’s personal suitability for the position.
