Researcher at the Centre for Research on Discretion and Paternalism
Centre for Research on Discretion and Paternalism at the Department of Administration and Organisation Theory has a vacancy for a temporary position as a Researcher (100%) for a period of 12 months, with the possibility of prolongation.

About the project/work tasks
The research fellow will work as part of the DISCRETION project: a large five-year research project, funded by the ERC Grant, and will be based at the Centre for Research on Discretion and Paternalism at the University of Bergen, Norway. Professor Marit Skivenes is the principal investigator for this project.
The main objectives for the Discretion project are to reveal the mechanisms for exercising discretion, and improve the understanding of the principle of the child ́s best interests. These objectives will be reached by systematically examining the role of institutional, organisational and individual factors including regulations of best interest principles; professions involved; type of courts; type of child protection system; demographic factors and individual values; and the populations’ view on children and paternalism. DISCRETION employs an innovative methodological approach, with multilevel and cross- country studies. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact the principal investigator for further details.

Your profile: qualifications and personal qualities
A Ph.D. in political science or in the social sciences (when clearly related to the project topic). The applicant must have submitted his/her Ph.D’s thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the Ph.D degree has been awarded at the start of employment.
Knowledge and experience with text analysis and qualitative methods
Knowledge and experience with quantitative methods
A demonstrated interest in engaging in independent research on topics related to the research project
As an applicant you should be able to work independently and have the ability to cooperate with others
Fluency in written and spoken English
Preferable with fluency in written and spoken Spanish and/ or German
Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their research and it’s fit with the project; the candidate’s methods skills; the candidate’s interest in the project’s topic; and the quality of the publications.

About the Centre for Research on Discretion and Paternalism
The research at the centre is comparative – between nations, systems and individuals, and includes researchers across the world. The PI professor Skivenes has just recently also been awarded a Norwegian Research Council grant. In Bergen, the Centre for Research on Discretion and Paternalism is a part of the Centre on Law and Social Transformation (UiB/CMI), and is involved in research collaboration at the Center for excellence, FAIR, at the Norwegian Business School as well as with the research group Law, Democracy and Welfare at Western Norway University of Applied Science.
About the research position
The duration of the research position is 12 months with a possibility for prolongation.

- Salary at pay grade 57 - 65 (code 1109) on the government salary scale upon appointment (equivalent to NOK 486.10 - 567.100 per year) in a full position. Further promotions are made according to length of service in the position.

The successful candidate is expected to live and work in Bergen during the project period and participate in common activities at the Centre.

Based on the expert committee’s report on the scholarly works, shortlisted candidates will then be invited to Bergen for an interview and may be asked to hold a trial teaching session or a trial lecture on a given topic.
