PhD position within Maritime Transport in the Arctic (SO IV-33/17)
The Department of Marine Technology, NTNU announces a PhD position, affiliated with the marine systems research group and related to the topic: Risk-based marine systems design for Arctic operations – linking ice conditions, ice induced load levels and risk.
Marine industries are to start maximizing the opportunities offered by the decline in Arctic sea ice extent. Providing transportation services in the Arctic implies operating in a complex and dynamic environment and therefore needs decision support for a great number of problems: On a strategic level, the optimal fleet mix needs to consider both long-term uncertainty in ice conditions and the associated risks. This may affect both the number, type and design of vessels (e.g. the vessel’s ice class). Within tactical route planning, vessels need short-term and medium-term predictions of ice conditions for planning their voyage. This may also include analysing satellite images using machine learning, evaluating ice loads experienced during operation, how much impact from the ice a vessel can withstand without suffering damage, the need for icebreaker assistance as well as estimating the additional time, cost and risk of sailing alternative routes. Having stronger ships comes at a cost, but may enable routing through the Arctic in worse ice conditions and with less use of icebreaker support. When sailing through ice,riskmay fluctuate sharply with varying ice conditions and understanding this risk is important to avoid accidents with a minimal cost. The main objective of this research is to contribute with the knowledge needed to develop models and methodologies for providing decision support for strategic and tactical planning of Arctic transportation.
The position is part of NTNU Oceans Pilot project "Risk, Reliability and Ice Data in Arctic Marine Environment - how to keep a sufficient safety level with little available data". The research will be carried out in cooperation with the NTNU Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management, Centre for Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems (AMOS), the Centre for Sustainable Arctic Marine and Coastal Technology, and industrial partners.
The position requires a MSc (or equivalent) degree in marine technology, applied mathematics/physics, computational mechanics, computer science or a similar relevant area. Good programming and machine learning skills are beneficial for the position. It is an advantage if the candidates have experience and knowledge about Arctic technology.
Excellent English skills, written and spoken, are required. Applicants from non-European countries where English is not the official language must present an official language test report. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
Master students in their final year are also invited to apply for an integrated PhD position. .
The successful candidate should be enthusiastic and highly motivated and be willing to work both independently and with other researchers.
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 432,300 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.
The position is of 4 years duration, of which 25% teaching duties.
