Associate Professor in Informatics - Programming

A position as Associate Professor is available at the Department of Informatics. The department consists of 12 research groups, including the Programming and Software Engineering research group with which this position is affiliated. We are seeking a scientist with a clear research vision, good educational, administrative and interpersonal skills, and abilities to establish and lead research projects.

The Programming and Software Engineering group has at present six permanent positions, four Professor/Associate Professors, one Senior Lecturer and one Lecturer. The core research themes of the group are empirical software engineering, design of object-oriented modelling and programming languages, their implementation in distributed systems, and algorithms for parallel programming.

The group members teach core topics in computer science and software engineering. Moreover, the group leads and participates in a number of research projects funded by the Norwegian Research Council and collaborates extensively with IT companies and other research institutions. See also the PSE website.

Specific information about the position

The successful candidate must have education at the doctoral level. He or she must be able to teach and also develop courses in programming at all levels. Supervision of MSc students and doctoral candidates will also be key tasks. Solid documented experience in research in programming with relevance to the active research topics of the group is a requirement.

Programming is an activity that is formed both by the problem domain and its requirements for speed, security, maintainability etc., as well as the programming language and environment used by software developers. Languages can be tailored to aid clean and efficient programming and to adapt to new contexts such as mobile and cloud computing, which also present new and challenging implementation requirements.

The applicant must have conducted and published high-quality practical (not formal) research in the areas of design, development, and implementation of parallel algorithms, distributed systems and programming language concepts and systems, as opposed to research mainly based on theoretical considerations. The preferred candidate has solid implementation experience and well-proven publication results, successful supervision, a publication record showing impact and preferably a good external research funding track record.
