PhD Candidate in Quaternary geology/palaeoclimate

UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Science and Technology, has a PhD position vacant for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD).

 

The position is affiliated with the research group in Coastal & Terrestrial Geosciences at the Department of Geosciences.

 

The appointment is for a period of four years.

 

The PhD position is for a fixed term, with the objective of completion of research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD candidate shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment. The position’s field of research/research project and other duties

The research field covers terrestrial Quaternary geology and palaeoclimate. The overall goal of the project is to reconstruct Late Pleistocene to Holocene environmental conditions in Svalbard and North Norway from lake sediment cores. This project will focus on reconstructions of Holocene precipitation, using leaf wax hydrogen isotopes as a proxy. We also aim to monitor modern Arctic lake sedimentation to study current environmental conditions and processes. The project has two main tasks; 1) testing the seasonality of plant-specific biomarkers known as leaf waxes on Svalbard and mainland North Norway by analyzing modern leaf wax hydrogen isotopes from lake sediment traps, 2) reconstruct Holocene palaeoclimate by analyzing leaf wax hydrogen isotopes and other proxies in lake sediment cores.

 

The successful candidate will dedicate 25% of her/his working time to duty work for the department. This may include teaching (e.g. supervision and evaluation of student exercises) at various levels.

 

Qualification requirements

Applicants must fulfil the requirements for admission to the faculty’s PhD programme, cf. Regulation for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. In addition, he/she must be able to document proficiency in English equivalent to Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification, refer to the website about PhD regulations at UiT. The successful candidate must have a Master degree or equivalent in Quaternary geology, preferably with focus on lake sediment studies, Quaternary stratigraphy, palaeoclimate, or palaeoecology.

 

The candidate is required to have knowledge about Arctic Quaternary environmental history and palaeoclimatic reconstructions from lake sediments. Experience with leaf wax hydrogen isotopes is an advantage but not a requirement. We also value experience with other proxies for palaeoclimatic reconstructions based on lake sediment records or other relevant sedimentary archives.

 

The research work will be performed in collaboration with national and international partners, and progress and results are expected to be presented at international conferences/workshops, as well as published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Therefore, a good command in English, both written and oral, is required. Applicants not able to communicate in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are required to learn Norwegian within a reasonable amount of time.

 

The project involves various types of fieldwork on Svalbard and in North Norway. It is expected that the successful candidate is able and willing to participate in physically demanding field campaigns of up to several weeks each year. Terrestrial fieldwork involves lake sediment coring and we therefore value previous experience with lake sediments both from coring campaigns and scientific analyses of sediment cores.

 

Willingness to longer visits at international and national partner institutions is expected. The project is carried out in collaboration with researchers in the US and at The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), and the successful candidate must be able and willing to spend significant amounts of time for lab analyses, data analysis, and scientific collaboration abroad. The Faculty of Science and Technology encourages and supports stays abroad for PhD students. Experience with teaching, scientific publication, conference presentations, and grant applications will be regarded as positive. Furthermore, experience with fieldwork in polar environments is considered an asset.

 

Emphasis shall also be attached to personal suitability. We value positive attitude, flexibility, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

 

Working conditions

The normal period of employment is four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year, distributed as 25 % of each year, shall be used for teaching or other duties for the university, cf. Guidelines for the research fellow’s duties.

 

A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the research fellow has already completed parts of his/her research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position (PhD Candidate, research assistant, or the like) in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.

 

Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

Assessment

An expert committee will assess the applicants. During this assessment process, emphasis will be attached to the applicant’s potential for research as shown by:

  • Master’s thesis or equivalent
  • any other academic works
  • professional references

 

In addition, the committee will consider work experience or other activities of significance for the implementation of the PhD studies, and to any teaching qualifications. This includes teaching education, teaching experience, experience from popularization and other types of dissemination. Information and material must be submitted by the stipulated deadline to be considered during the assessment.

 

The applicants who are assessed as the best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview shall among other things aim to clarify the applicant’s personal suitability for the position.
